    Om programmet

    Why is our program important?

In Spain there is no national or even regional organisation responsible for managing the welfare of companion animals, or for rescuing cats and dogs that are lost, abandoned, mistreated or living on the streets.  It is the responsibility of the local town councils who are usually undermanned and underfunded to manage this.  As a result this work is more often than not managed by private organisations like APROP.  Although we receive some funding from the local council, it is a small fraction of the costs that we incur each year.  As a result we are funded primarily by donations and our own fundraising activities and the organisation is run by volunteers with no additional help from the local authorities.

We take in cats and dogs that are lost, abandoned or mistreated. Our aim is to find every animal the right permanent home for them, whether that is returning them to their original owner, finding them a new adoptive home or putting them into suitable long term foster care.

What is the role of the volunteer?

As a charity we rely on volunteers to run APROP.  The volunteers are mixed nationalities, some of whom visit Spain on a temporary basis, as well as local Spanish volunteers.  The only qualification that is necessary is willingness and a love of cats and dogs and a desire to help them.  There are various jobs and tasks that need doing on a daily or regular basis, including cleaning, feeding, tidying, organising, walking, cuddling, grooming and socialising.  The volunteers can therefore choose whether to work with the cats or the dogs (or both) and what type of work they prefer to do according to the abilities and preferences.

When a dog or cat arrives at APROP we assess each animal’s individual needs when arrive so that we can ensure they receive the appropriate care and outcome.  These will vary depending on the age, health and background of the animal.

Every animal is checked by one of our partner vets for their physical health and are tested for endemic diseases, vaccinated and sterilised if necessary.

Many of the dogs that arrive at APROP, particularly the hunting dogs, are in a poor state either physically and/or mentally.  and every dog is assessed by a professional dog trainer and, if necessary, given appropriate training or behavioural therapy.

Cats are also assessed for their behaviour by experienced volunteers to determine their temperament and whether they are feral or domesticated, if they need any behavioural training and what the best outcome for them will be.

Every animal will have a personal outcome plan.

While the cats and dogs are at the shelter, it is the volunteers’ responsibility to ensure that their physical and mental needs are met in terms of their nutrition, medication, general care, exercise, stimulation and training.  The goal for all of the animals is to get them in the best possible shape so that they can be permanently rehomed in a situation that suits them.

Supporting this activity we also have teams of volunteers that are responsible for adoptions, fostering, promotion, social media and fundraising.

    Environment

The APROP shelter is located on the outskirts of Pego town in the middle of the orange groves, but accessible and within walking distance to the town which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the centre.

It is a beautiful and rural location that is great for walking APROP's dogs and also for the many feral cats in our shelter's colony.

Accommodation is offered at the house of one of our volunteers who lives in the centre of Pego town, which is a great location to experience the local town life and is obviously very convenient for local bars, restaurants and shops.

What do you need to bring with you?

We just need your enthusiasm and willingness to work as a member of our team and a desire to help the animals.  No special equipment is required.  We do, however, recommend that you ensure that your tetanus vaccination is up to date.

    Typisk dag

The morning shifts usually start between 8 and 9am depending on the time of year (earlier in the summer to beat the heat).

The dog team also have a full shift in the afternoon that starts between 3 and 4pm (time of year dependent).

The cat team do not have a full shift in the afternoon but often need at least one volunteer to go in late afternoon/early evening to feed any younger cats that need extra food or any cat that needs afternoon medication.

The dog shifts usually comprise at least two cleaners and as many dog walkers as possible, which is usually 3-4.
The cat shifts normally comprise two or three  people, two to clean and sometimes one to help with light duties and socialise with the cats.

The priority for the dog and cat teams is to firstly check whether any animals have been left in the outside kennel for us overnight.  If so, these animals have to be assessed and either allocated a kennel space or taken directly to the vet if they need it.

For the dog team the next priority is to get as many dogs out with the walking team as possible.  While they are out walking their kennels can be swept and mopped and their water changed and breakfast prepared for when they get back.  Obviously all the dogs can't go out at the same time so this is done in rotation.  Each dog has an allocated food allowance which needs to be measured out for them.  There is also a notice board for any dog that needs medication, and a supply of sausage in the fridge to help it go down more easily.  The important thing is that every animal has its own requirements, whether it is in quarantine, a new arrival, an animal that needs special rehabilitation work with our specialist trainer, or whether they are a long term resident with special needs.  It is essential therefore that the team leader allocates activities appropriately and that the volunteers follow that guidance to prevent any accidents happening, or any dog not receiving the correct food or treatment.  After all the dogs have been walked, most of the dogs will be allowed out into the play area so that they can run around and socialise together and with the volunteers.

For the cat area the process is very similar  The first job for the cat volunteers is usually to feed the feral colony that lives just outside the shelter, many of which are very tame and expect five star treatment.  After they have been satisfied, the cats in the shelter are fed.  There is a feeding board with instructions for each cat and it is important to ensurer that all the cats in the communal areas get a share of what they need.  There is also a medical notice board for any medical treatments that need to be administered.  Each pen has its own allocated cleaning tools to prevent any cross-infection.  Each pen has have the litter boxes cleaned, the floor swept and mopped with disinfectant and water bowls cleaned and refilled.

Socialisation is very important for the cats, some of which may have behavioural issues and may need to be encouraged to interact.  Brushing and playing with the cats is as important as everything else as this stimulates them and also helps us to assess their behaviour and suitability for an adoptive home.

Sometimes the work may seem hard going, particularly when you are working in high temperatures, or when an animal in a particularly distressing state arrives, but generally the rewards greatly outweigh any downsides.  The best thing is when you see the animals looking happy and healthy and particularly when a cat or dog leaves to start its life with its new family.

There are other ways in which volunteers may be involved, for example with fundraising activities such as events or markets which occur throughout the year.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

Pego is situated in a beautiful area of the Costa Blanca.  Pego is one of the oldest towns in the area and is fairly traditional with the majority of the locals speaking the valenciano dialect amongst themselves and Spanish castellano being their second language.  Pego has some of the most spectacular fiestas in the area, particularly the Moors & Christians fiesta in July.  The local tourist office can provide a diary of events - there is always something going on.

Pego is in a valley surrounded by mountains and it is a paradise for anybody who enjoys hiking, climbing or cycling in the area.

Just 10km from Pego are the long golden sandy beaches that span miles and are great for sunbathing, swimming and watersports.

Pego is also in the middle of the Marjals "marshes" where the locals grow rice in flooded fields.  This is a great place for walking or relaxing and where you can see a variety of different birds, including ibis, raptors and even flamingoes occasionally.

Pego is also about a hour by car from the city of Valencia to the north and Alicante to the south and about 2 hours by bus from Alicante to Denia so it is inadvisable to book early morning flights unless you are going to hire a car.   Denia, Alicante and Valencia are all worth visiting, as well as many other destinations such as the beautiful village of Guadalest.  And a bit closer there are also the tourist destinations of Gandia, Denia and Javea, all with their own individual charm.

We need volunteers all year round, but particularly during the summer months when so many people are away on holiday.

There is no set starting day or date, but we welcome anybody who can contribute their time to help us.

We need volunteers to look after the animals every day, but this does not mean that you will have to work every day if you do not wish to.  But we will expect you to work with us either in the morning or the afternoon for the majority of the days that you are with us.  Normally you will help care for the cats and/or dogs 5 mornings a week in accordance with the published rota but you can let your preferences be known to the rota co-ordinators.

Pego is an hour's drive between either Valencia or Alicante, depending on how and where you are coming from.  There is a train service from Alicante to Denia, from where you can get a taxi to Pego.  The Pego Tourist information office will be able to give you more information on this and other travel options.

    Om prosjektet

APROP rescues and rehabilitates cats and dogs in in the Pego area of Spain and cares for lost, abandoned and abused ones.

    Møt din vert

    Who we are

APROP is a not for profit animal rescue association focussed on cats and dogs from the Pego area.  The association came into being in 2017.  APROP is manned by volunteers and we are a mixed nationality group of people, some of whom live permanently in the area, and others who volunteer with us when they visit the area.

    What we do

APROP takes in and rescues dogs and cats that are lost, abandoned or abused.  APROP rehabilitates and cares for them until they can be found suitable loving homes for the duration of their lifetime.

APROP also supports the rights of feral cats to live in the community and has a program to trap and sterilise local street cats and return them to their local colony.

    Where we work

APROP is located on the outskirts of Pego, which is one of the oldest towns in the region. The APROP shelter is in the middle of the orange groves.  As well as being a beautiful location, it is a perfect place for dog walking, while still being close enough to walk into the town and enjoy a coffee at one of the local cafes or any of the town's other amenities.  Pego is 10km from the long sandy beaches of Denia Deveses, which is popular tourist resort, and between Pego and the coast are the Pego Marjals (marshes), which is known for its rice production and rich natural environment and which is a birdwatchers paradise.  The area around Pego is very popular with cyclists and walkers because there are so many beautiful areas to discover and trails to follow.

    Our stated mission & goals

APROP’s mission is to ensure that no cats or dogs in the Pego area suffer from being abandoned, lost or mistreated. Where appropriate, APROP will take in animals to rehabilitate and care for them, and find them loving homes for the duration of their lifetime; and will support the wellbeing of feral cats in the community.

APROP will provide an environment which encourages the physical health and mental and emotional well-being of the animals; as well as providing a culture of mutual respect, collaboration and friendliness amongst its volunteers and Associates.

    Who are we looking for?

We welcome volunteers who share our mission, ethos and passion for helping cats and dogs in need and finding them permanent loving homes.

    Why choose us?

Firstly because we are always in need of volunteers to help us, and value whatever contribution you can make to our organisation while you are with us.  As well as being very focussed on the wellbeing of our animals, we also want to ensure that our volunteers have an enjoyable and safe experience with us and feel valued.  Many friendships are made between volunteers when they spend time with APROP, which is not surprising when you realise that we all have so much in common with each other.  But volunteering with APROP will bring its own rewards when you see how you are helping to improve the lives of cats and dogs and make them happy.
