Sul programma

North Bali Reef Conservation needs the support from international volunteers to help with its current projects. One main focus is building and deploying artificial reefs onto an area of previously destroyed reef. Volunteers will work alongside other international volunteers and local fishermen to build personalised artificial reef structures, which are regularly deployed into the sea using traditional fishing boats.

We plan to do one dive per week, which normally take place on Thursday. For volunteers that have at least an Open Water certification will be able to join our scuba dive and arrange these structures under water, between 6-8m, where they will provide habitats to a wide variety of marine species. An on-site reef monitoring program has shown that the artificial reefs improve marine biodiversity by 7x, compared to the previously destroyed area of reef and it is great for volunteers to see their hard work paying off!

During turtle nesting and hatching season (May-August) volunteers have an opportunity to help in our turtle conservation area. This involves creating pathways and ensuring turtle hatchlings safely make it to the sea. In the turtle conservation area, there is approximately one nest hatching per week, but please note this cannot be guaranteed.

North Bali Reef Conservation was set up in Tianyar village and volunteer accommodation is just a stone’s throw away from the beach with a perfect view out to the ocean. Artificial reefs are constructed on this beach under the shade of tall palm trees. The structures are deployed directly out from the building area. Tianyar is in the region of Karangasem and is three hours from Bali’s capital Denpasar. Visiting the fishing village of Tianyar is a unique cultural experience because unlike the much of South Bali, it is untouched by tourism. It is also a great site to call home as volunteers travel around Bali with good condition road links both north and south. Many volunteers choose to take day trips to feel mentally and culturally enriched at Balinese Hindu temples such as Lempuyang temple, to cool off in waterfalls such as Aling-Aling or to hike to the top of Mt Batur and witness the breathtaking Balinese sunrise.

What can volunteers expect?

North Bali Reef Conservation is a Non-Governmental Organisation and volunteering program based in the small fishing village of Tianyar on the North East coast of Bali. Tianyar’s reef has potential to be a healthy and highly diverse coral reef but is currently in poor condition due to abusive and unsustainable actions in the past. Until the 1950s the Tianyar beach was a port for traders who used to anchor their ships on the reef. Before, it was also fashionable to harvest coral for it to be crushed into a fine white powder and used to show a families wealth when painted on the outside of their house. More recently, the marine ecosystem is under pressure from plastic pollution choking marine life as well as pressure from local fishermen. An urgent need to protect and conserve the reef was identified and in July 2017 North Bali Reef Conservation was founded by I Ketut De Sujana Mahartana, the founder of Volunteer in Bali Program and Zach Boakes, an undergraduate environmental scientist. Alongside our aim to restore and conserve Tianyar’s coral reef, we also aim to provide an alternative, sustainable livelihood to the local people. North Bali Reef Conservation has since started several environmental and sustainability projects focusing on education, mentality change, no take Marine Protection Area (MPA), pollution reduction, and the construction of artificial reef structures.

I stayed for three weeks. You volunteer from Monday to Thursday and the rest of the time is your own. A group of us each Thursday would head off to a nearby village to check out some of the other areas in Bali. Each week you do 1-2 dives if you want to and then you can go to other areas and do ...

One of the best experiences I've made so far. I only stayed for about 2 weeks on the camp site but got to connect with amazing people, other volounteers, the staff and the local people as well. The camp site was very remote which I enjoyed and we got to do the more touristy stuff on the weekends. ..
