À propos du programme

Set on a beautiful 18 000 hectare game reserve in the wilds of Zimbabwe, this project is great for people interested in a career in equine industry, experience on a fully functional cattle farm or those looking for horse management work experience. If you are looking for large animal experience for your studies, have always wanted to ride with African wildlife, get lots of hours in the saddle then this is a great project choice.

The ranch is home to 200 cattle, with 2 pedigree breeds- Boran and Inkone. There are 100 calving cows on the farm - the calving season is October/November where volunteers assist with the calving process - Cattle need to be dipped, vaccinated and herded to different areas on the ranch.

As a volunteer you will be involved with hands-on work within the yard, which houses 13 horses with everything from ponies to rescued racing thoroughbreds, Arab crosses and appaloosas. Incredible riding opportunities throughout the game reserve where you can spot a wide range of game from horseback.

Your days will be split into different riding, farm and bush activities from trail rides searching for giraffe, zebra, brown hyena and leopard, cattle focused tasks, cross country riding exploring the bush, going up boulders for breath taking views, stable duties, training young horses - and if you’re lucky witnessing the birth of a new foal.

Journée typique

Volunteer Key Activities

Africa provides an ever-changing environment, power failures, water and fuel shortages, temperature fluctuations, and other uncontrollable situations do occur. You will need to remain flexible, understanding and good-humoured. “African time” can be difficult and frustrating for those who are used to a very structured life, so this is something to bare in mind.

Once you arrive in Zimbabwe, your care is the responsibility of your project manager. Through your project manager we aim to provide you with your daily needs, keep you out of harms way and to support you in your work. In exchange we ask you to attend work punctually and to behave consistently in ways that will reflect well on your project manager.

The first week of the program you will go through a number of inductions at the yard. This will include stable’s daily rota, schooling plans, the personality of the horses and a chance to familiarizes yourself with the rides in the park. Thereafter the working week at the stables runs from Monday to Saturday, with Sundays off.

As a volunteer you will undertake a variety of activities, such as:

  • Schooling horses
  • Going on game viewing rides
  • Tracking the leopards and spotted hyenas on horseback
  • Snare sweeps
  • Wildlife management exercises on horseback such as boundary patrols and snare sweeps
  • Swimming with horses

Extra days off can be organised if required so volunteers can participate in other activities around the game reserve, such as visiting the local school and working with the children. The requirements of the stable change from day-to-day, therefore an open mind and flexible attitude is a must! Volunteers can expect to spend an average of 2-6 hours daily on horseback.

Volunteers are advised to bring their own riding gear- helmet, boots, jods/jeans etc. All tack is provided by the location.

Activités de loisirs

There are a wide range of activities for volunteers to enjoy during their off days. Volunteers can participate in other activities around the game reserve, such as visiting the local school and working with the children.

Being set on a game reserve means that game viewing and sightseeing around the reserve is always available. The reserve is set in a mountainous area where it is possible to go for hikes, enjoy the scenery from the top of a mountain, admire the animals on the reserve and have the opportunity to do some wildlife photography.

Sur le projet

Our goal is to improve animal welfare worldwide by providing volunteers to help vets and vet nurses working with wildlife and domestic animals.

Rencontrez votre hôte

As an organisation, our goal is simple. Improve animal welfare around the world. Anyone can volunteer with us, you do not need to be a vet or vet student, although many of our courses are very popular with such applicants.

We offer a multi-modal approach to assisting animals, including:

  • Running volunteer opportunities for you to help or study abroad.
  • Sponsoring vets to visit areas needing support.
  • Providing medications and surgical equipment
  • Training local vets and technicians.

By volunteering with us you will gain hands on experience with animals, learn new skills and give something back. For those considering a career in medicine or nursing, this is a great way to understand more about the career path and see if it is right for you. It provides industry relevant experience and is a wonderful addition to your CV, making you stand out when you apply to your chosen college or university. Those already studying animal and medical courses can gain credits and count their trip as work experience (including EMS or CEMS). Most importantly you can learn a huge range of new concepts and develop your skills and confidence in a friendly and encouraging environment.

Worldwide Vets is registered in the UK, with our administrative head office close to London, England. The real hub of our work is much further away, with vet clinics and conservation projects in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zanzibar, Ghana, Thailand, India, Cambodia, Peru, and Costa Rica, to name just a few. We welcome volunteers to join our mission and contribute to the role we play. Doing so is a great way to give something back to the world around you, saving innocent lives, alleviating poverty and playing your part in sustaining the natural and cultural planet we know today.

I went to Costa Rica and it was amazing! Natuwa Wildlife Sanctuary made me feel safe and Dr. Mora (the vet that lives on site) taught me many things in my stay! He is a talented veterinarian and knows what he is doing. It was a great experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I believe this ...
