    Sobre el programa

The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a sanctuary for rescued exotic primates.  The focus of our primate keeping volunteer programme is to work alongside the primate keepers to ensure the health and wellbeing of our rescued primates (lemurs, monkeys and gibbon).

In your first few days working with our primate keeping team, you'll think all the monkeys look and act the same.  Over time, you'll experience the joy that is starting to observe their different personalities and characteristics.  Our primate keeping team are responsible for all the food for the primates, for cleaning the feeding platforms and water bowls and distributing the food.  They will monitor things like the weather and what is growing naturally in the forest in deciding which food and the quantities thereof to prepare for each day.

Our primate keeping team are also responsible for monitoring the free-roaming primates for any changes in behaviour, illnesses or injuries and taking the appropriate action.
As the primates are all free-roaming, you won't be spending your days shovelling up monkey poop.  However, we do have a pre-release area, where any new arrivals are de-humanised and rehabilitated before they can be released into the wider forest.  These enclosures do need to be kept clean, even if there are no primates in them, so there may be some occasional cleaning of enclosures.
Finally, our primate keepers are responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our primates. This involves activities such as checking the perimeter fence, making any repairs and removing alien vegetation.

Volunteers do not need to bring any special equipment with them.  Volunteers will be provided with two branded golf shirts and a branded fleece to wear as uniform during their stay.  Volunteers will need to bring their own pants/trousers.  Accepted uniform colours are brown, grey, green or khaki/stone.  Waterproof shoes/boots or wellington boots/gum boots are also recommended.

The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer Rules

We want you to have a fantastic and fulfilling time whilst volunteering with us but we also want to ensure that you, our staff and our resident primates remain safe. The following rules have been put in place to ensure safety for all and to maintain the high standards of our sanctuaries. Please read them carefully and adhere to them throughout your stay.

    1. When reporting for duty, all volunteers must be dressed in the issued uniform; shorts/skirts must be of a decent length, no “hotpants”.
    2. Report on duty clean and sober.
    3. Follow the instructions of your assigned supervisor/mentor.
    4. Never attempt to touch or interact with (this includes teasing or encouraging a reaction from) any of the resident primates or wild animals in our forest.
    5. Do not hand-feed any of the animals.
    6. Do not take ‘selfies’ with any animals or take photos with animals that give the impression that you are interacting with the animal(s). Posting of any such photos on social media is a strict contravention of our sanctuary rules.
    7. Volunteers are not permitted to enter the forest alone.
    8. If volunteers are invited to be present and/or to assist during a veterinary visit, veterinary instructions must be followed at all times.
    9. Volunteers are not allowed to drive any company vehicles or work with heavy machinery or power tools.
    10. Volunteers are not permitted to use the sanctuary telephones or computer equipment unless requested or approved to do so by a member of the management team.
    11. Personal mobile phones must be kept out of sight (e.g. in a pocket) and left on silent or vibrate. Volunteers are requested not to use their mobile phones in public areas.
    12. Smoking inside the sanctuary areas, in (or on) any vehicle and anywhere in view of visitors, is strictly forbidden. Please use the designated smoking areas only.
NOTE: Failure to follow the rules regarding touching, hand-feeding and/or interacting with the animals in our care will result in the volunteer being instructed to leave the Sanctuary, our Volunteer Programme and the Volunteer House immediately

    Actividades de tiempo libre

On working days, most volunteers just like to relax after the evening meal, either by watching a movie or playing cards or a board game or just sitting and having a chat, maybe over a cold beer from the honesty bar.

On leisure days though, it's a good idea to make the most of your time in South Africa and get out and see and do as much as possible.
Close to the volunteer house, there is ziplining, horseriding, surfing lessons, beaches with tidal pools, guided snorkelling, boat trips, canopy obstacle course, mountain bike trails, shopping centres, a cinema, restaurants and bars.

A little further away is Hluhluwe-Umfolozi (the oldest game reserve in Africa), the town of St Lucia and iSimangaliso Wetlands Park (a world heritage site and famous for the hippos that sometimes come out of the estuary and into the town in the evenings) and the Drakensberg Mountains (another world heritage site) to name just a few.

A 23-hectare forest sanctuary providing a safe forever home for captive raised exotic primates

    Conoce a tu anfitrión(a)

    Who are we?

The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary (previously called Monkeyland-KZN) is the newest and largest sanctuary in the award-winning South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) group of sanctuaries. SAASA has been providing safe forever homes to previously captive primates, birds and big cats since 1998.

    What do we do?
The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest free-roaming primate sanctuary in Africa, is a true sanctuary, providing a safe forever home for unwanted ex-zoo animals and pets.  At The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, these primates can enjoy a life as close as possible to the one nature intended.  They live un-caged, roaming freely through the 23-hectare indigenous forest, alongside other primate species and indigenous wildlife.

They form troops, forage for wild food, scent mark and patrol their territories and a myriad of other natural behaviours once given the environment in which to be more free.

As a true sanctuary, there is strictly no human-animal interaction.  Staff, volunteers and visitors are welcome to photograph and video the primates or just enjoy watching them monkeying around but cannot touch, hand-feed or get too close, which may make them feel threatened.

    Where we work?
Our sanctuary is located in the stunning Dolphin Coast area of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). We enjoy year-round warm air and sea temperatures and are ideally located for exploring all the cultural, historical, wildlife and adventure attractions that KZN has to offer. All this, and it's a malaria-free area of South Africa.

    Our mission and goals
The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary's first priority is to provide a safe forever home to rescued exotic primates.  The sanctuary offers guided tours of the forest which helps to achieve our second aim which is to educate people about the threats and challenges these primates face both in captivity and in the wild.

    Who are we looking for?
We welcome anybody with a passion for nature and wildlife and a willingness to work hard and be flexible. Sanctuary work is rarely glamorous but very rewarding.

    Why choose us?
So many reasons, but here's the my Top 3.  Firstly, if you love animals, you will want to invest your time with a place that you know truly cares for them. The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a truly ethical sanctuary as evidenced by the recent Wild Choices assessment. The needs of the animals always come first. There is no interaction, the animals in our care are treated with respect and allowed to live freely in the forest.
Secondly, we have a fantastic small team who will become not only your work mates but also your friends. As well as helping you at the sanctuary, they're sure to teach you lots about the local culture and they'll have you speaking Zulu in no time at all.
All of that, plus we are located in the most stunning province of South Africa.  KwaZulu-Natal is somewhat of a hidden gem.  It's not full of visitors and is still a little undiscovered by the masses.  Big 5 game reserves, mountains, adventure activities, sites of historical and cultural importance and world heritage sites are all on our doorstep.
