About the program

This unique 4-week Internship program is designed for high school volunteers aspiring to be doctors and healthcare practitioners. Interns will work alongside experienced local health care professionals to mentor them in identifying public health challenges in the community and to build the systemic thinking capacity to better succeed in pre-health degrees. Very tangibly, Interns will focus on a specific health challenge to research in depth and provide a final presentation in the form of recommendation of how OGVO engages future volunteers and local staff to help resolve these challenges. The Internship also features site visits to local medical facilities, professional guest speakers, and college essay guidance before, during and after the program.

Internship Overview:

  • For graduating high school sophomores and juniors
  • By teacher/counselor recommendation only
  • 4-week sessions
  • Incorporates 2-3 days per week working alongside a local health care professional
  • 2-3 days per week volunteering at a youth organization with OGVO High School ‘Health’ Volunteers
  • Medical Professional site-visits and Guest Speakers
  • Home Stay- accommodations, cultural activities, and weekend excursions with other High School volunteers

4-week Sample Itinerary

Overview: During the four weeks the Interns will meet with their local mentor 2-3 days a week to participate in specialized programming, while joining other OGVO high school volunteers in health educational and small construction projects in local schools in addition to fun weekend excursion activities.

Week 1-Introduction to Health Challenges: Interns will spend the first week investigating a variety of public health care challenges in their assigned community. They will meet with the mentor for shadowing sessions, visits local medical facilities, and have meetings with local health care professionals in the community.

Week 2-Investigation of a Health Challenge: Interns will be presented with a more specific public health challenge in the community from their volunteer and shadowing experience and begin the process of researching possible "solutions" with the guidance of their mentor. The role of the mentor would be to meet with these students to discuss the challenge and proposed solutions; rebutting with any societal and economic challenges and encouraging deeper thinking surrounding complexities. Students research and gain a greater understanding of the systemic health issue they identify by combining various public health factors (economic, educational, familial, nutrition, medical resources, environmental, etc).

Week 3- Health Challenge Proposal Development: Interns continue with mentor shadowing, medical visits, and guest speakers, and develop a draft of their proposal for the identified health issue. Health challenge solutions will include specific project proposals that OGVO volunteers might realize in the future thus contributing real world problem solving. Mentors will continue to provide guidance and challenge them with greater complexities in community.

Week 4- Health Challenge Proposal Presentation: Prepare and present solution to issue through presentation involving all group members. Presentation will be given to Country Director, relevant group speakers, and mentors. Presentation is 20-30 minutes in total, and is accompanied by a written summary by the group.

About the project

Our Generation Voluntary Organization (OGVO) works to foster cross-cultural understanding through travel and volunteer work experiences in Ghana, Africa.

Meet your organization

The Our Generation Voluntary Organization (OGVO) was founded in 2004 in order to enable young people to use their leisure time for international volunteering, interns, cultural exchange programs etc. in Ghana. Our Generation Voluntary Organization is a non-profit and non-governmental African Organisation. Our volunteer programs/projects are suitable for anyone on a Gap Year, Career Break or for anyone looking to do a short term volunteer program.

Our Generation Voluntary Organisation provides safe, unique, flexible, meaningful and extremely affordable volunteer programs and non-paid internships work-experience in Ghana. We have a variety of programs on offer at affordable prices. Our projects are designed to cater to the needs of people from all backgrounds.

Since its inception in 2004, OGVO has delivered great experiences to thousands of volunteers across the ten regions of Ghana. Our Medical and Healthcare internships are much admired amongst the medical students, and this is where medics get hands-on knowledge into complex medical procedures. Be it for college credits or an internship or volunteer certificate or even a service learning trip - schoolies, gapers and numerous high school students enroll for our programs throughout the year.

Our Generation Voluntary Organisation's volunteer and intern programs are available in both urban and rural areas. OGVO has flexible start dates and durations that runs from 1 week to 6 months depending on the program of your choice. Extensions can be arranged with advanced notice. You can arrive any day of the year with advanced notice as well. During this time, you will be staying in the home of a local Ghanaian family. Our host families are carefully screened, socially respected and experienced with hosting international volunteers.  Accommodation is simple but clean and includes 3 meals a day of local cuisine. Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the host family and have lunch at their project.

OGVO believes that home stays offer you the best experience during your time in Ghana by allowing you to save money, while providing you with an easy way to integrate into Ghanaian culture. In most cases, you will share a room with volunteers (of same gender). Your weekends are free to explore some of the amazing sights that Ghana has to offer. Volunteers regularly travel together and our team will help you plan weekend trips. Our staff visits volunteers regularly and always happy to help our volunteers in any way needed.

At Our Generation Voluntary Organisation  our programs are designed to help the local communities at the same time of providing a valuable learning and cultural experience to our volunteers and interns. We invite you to volunteer or intern in Ghana with us, and have the experience of your lifetime!

As a volunteer or intern in Ghana you will have the opportunity to work in number of different capacities including Teaching English & other subjects to kids, Medical & healthcare internships, Dental electives,Veterinary, and many more!
