About the program

Volunteers working on a medical volunteer campaign aid in treating and educating patients, providing basic checkups and treatment to members of the community. Volunteers also help to distribute vitamins and other medication, and deliver health education information appropriate to both children and adults. A week-long Medical Volunteer Campaign involves visiting and working with up to five communities throughout the week and days typically include 4 hours volunteer work per day.

During the week-long campaign, your group will work together with our local team to provide basic health services to populations that may not otherwise have access to regular healthcare services.

OGVO Groups are incredibly beneficial to these communities, as they enable both children and adults to receive basic check-ups, important vitamins and medication and to increasing their understanding of basic health topics.

Volunteers are required to bring their own basic medical supplies, including a white coat, scrubs, disposable rubber (or latex) gloves, antibacterial soap or sanitizer, a stethoscope, and a blood pressure cuff. Advice on further supplies to bring can be provided by the OGVO team once group applied.

OGVO Medical Volunteer Campaigns are open to all volunteers with relevant training or experience in healthcare. Group members can be in early stages of training (pre-med, pre-nursing, pre-dental, pre-health, etc), or can already be in Medical/Nursing school (any year of study). Fully qualified group members are also welcome to participate, however volunteers will always be supervised by local staff regardless of their level of qualification and experience.

The standard OGVO Medical/Healthcare projects (listed under each of our OGVO Program Pages) take place within urban/rural community hospitals/clinics, healthcare centers or assisted-living facilities and can have only 3 to 5 volunteers assisting them at any one time. Clinics and centers are often limited to providing healthcare only to those who arrive at the clinic that day, and volunteers will have a largely observational role within the clinic structure. Groups are still able to participate on these projects (for example, if volunteering for more than 1 week), however groups will be split into smaller teams; volunteering across a few different clinics/hospitals and centers in the local area.

OGVO Medical Volunteer Campaigns, on the other hand, are available for groups of volunteers working together alongside local medical staff. As the groups are closely supervised and guided by local Medical staff, your group members are able to engage in a greater range of hands-on medical work, reaching out to a much higher number of patients per day, as the Campaigns actively travel to the patients’ communities rather than relying on the patients to come to them at the clinics/hospitals.

Volunteers are accompanied by a local medical specialist and/or a local doctor/nurse, all of whom are bilingual. While medical training is not typically provided on OGVO programs, OGVO Groups on the Medical Volunteer Campaign will usually receive an introduction/overview of how to take vitals. This is dependent on the experience and current level of training that group members have.

All OGVO volunteers receive a thorough Program Orientation on the first day of the program, which covers many details about the program overall, the local area, health and safety and the volunteer work.

In each of our program settings, we also have a full team of staff who provide 24/7 assistance and support for our volunteers; both during volunteer work, and during free time. Additionally, OGVO Groups are assigned a staff member from our local team, in addition to medical staff, to help with any questions or concerns during the program.

Can I use this program as part of a college or university placement?

It is certainly possible to use one of OGVO’s programs as part of your university or college placement. Project staff can sign off any paperwork required by your course tutors. OGVO regularly receives medical, childcare, psychology and nursing placement students at our projects across Ghana and we have ties with some of the leading universities.

If you’re a course tutor and would like further information about how one of OGVO’s programs could meet the placement requirements for your degree course then please contact us directly.

Free-time activities

Volunteers get the weekends off to go on trips and explore Ghana included in the cost; Ghana has so much to offer volunteers with its rich culture, festivals, food, art & craft centers, castles & forts, long sandy beaches, national parks, waterfalls, rain forest and other interesting places to visit. Volunteers who come to Ghana experience these even more fully by getting an insider's understanding of the country.

Every weekend we organize trips for our volunteers to travel throughout Ghana to experience the Ghanaian cultural and explore. We have a lot of projects all over Ghana so you can choose to volunteer in the second largest city, Kumasi or in the Ghanaian country side.

Our program is an excellent opportunity to combine adventurous foreign travel with a worthwhile job as a volunteer. You will improve your transferable skills such as team-working, presentation and communication. Above all, this is an unrivaled opportunity to gain an insight into a completely different culture and way of life.

Our projects are not all about work, volunteers get opportunities to explore this beautiful part of West Africa. Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, Kakum National Park and Nzulezo Stilt Village are all within few hours from the community you will be staying in, Ghana offers an array of varying cultures and landscapes including national parks and stunning rain-forests.

Accommodation

Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local host family, and will gain the opportunity to become immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Ghanaian families are renowned for their kindness and hospitality and they love to learn about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!

All families have been fully vetted by our team and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Bedrooms are private but generally shared with volunteers of the same gender. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom. Generally, your host brother, sister or mother assist you with your laundry but it is not an obligation, learn to wash your clothing’s with your hands in several buckets, enjoy the sun drying your clothes and odor the African fragrance in your clothes.

It is important to remember that the living conditions in Ghana are different from home. Most families have running water, but hot water is still uncommon in some areas. Although the accommodation is basic, this is part of the challenge and experience of volunteering in a developing country. With a little patience, and a flexible attitude, you will quickly get used to your new surroundings.

Food & Beverages

Host families will provide volunteers with breakfast, lunch and dinner during the working week.

Breakfast is usually ready by around 7am; however you can eat later if you prefer to get up late. Lunch is usually packed by your host family in a lunch box so that you can eat at your project if you wish. Dinner is usually served around 6pm.

If you have special eating needs, you can indicate that while applying. Even though special eating needs are not something we can guarantee, we will do our best to meet your needs.

Since its inception in 2004, OGVO has delivered great experiences to thousands of volunteers across the ten regions of Ghana. Our Medical and Healthcare internships are much admired amongst the medical students, and this is where medics get hands-on knowledge into complex medical procedures. Be it for college credits or an internship or volunteer certificate or even a service learning trip - schoolies, gapers and numerous high school students enroll for our programs throughout the year.

Our Generation Voluntary Organisation's volunteer and intern programs are available in both urban and rural areas. OGVO has flexible start dates and durations that runs from 1 week to 6 months depending on the program of your choice. Extensions can be arranged with advanced notice. You can arrive any day of the year with advanced notice as well. During this time, you will be staying in the home of a local Ghanaian family. Our host families are carefully screened, socially respected and experienced with hosting international volunteers.  Accommodation is simple but clean and includes 3 meals a day of local cuisine. Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the host family and have lunch at their project.

OGVO believes that home stays offer you the best experience during your time in Ghana by allowing you to save money, while providing you with an easy way to integrate into Ghanaian culture. In most cases, you will share a room with volunteers (of same gender). Your weekends are free to explore some of the amazing sights that Ghana has to offer. Volunteers regularly travel together and our team will help you plan weekend trips. Our staff visits volunteers regularly and always happy to help our volunteers in any way needed.
