About the program

Be more than a mere tourist who travel to the Galapagos Islands every year only to take some exciting photos! Come to Galapagos to contribute to the conservation of natural habitats in this fragile ecosystem and help protect endemic flora and fauna. By volunteering on the Galapagos Islands, you also get involved in local communities and help with environmental education.

The Placement

This volunteer project in the Galapagos Islands gives you the unique opportunity to spend an extended time on these famous islands.

The Galapagos Islands are home to around 500 native plant species, but over 700 species have been introduced! The island of San Cristobal is located 960 kilometers from the mainland right in the Pacific. The Humboldt, Cromwell and Panama currents cross here, which means that the Galapagos Islands are extremely diverse. In recent decades, the Galapagos Islands have seen a higher birth rate and an increasing number of tourists. This led to a much higher demand for food and other products. Endemic plants had to give way to agriculture and livestock farming. The Galapagos Islands, however, could not produce enough to meet the increasing demand. For this reason, the government had to allow imports from the mainland, which had fatal consequences. With the imports of (fresh) food and agricultural products came non-endemic species such as the blackberry (spreads very quickly) but also many plant pests that threaten the native flora and fauna.

An important part of the volunteer project on the island of San Cristobal / Galapagos is to counter the spread of these species in order to protect the local flora and fauna. The project is pursuing various approaches for this goal

  • Eradicating imported plants
  • Reforestation of endemic plants
  • Promoting a sustainable lifestyle
  • Education of the population
  • Community work (construction work, environmental education, English lessons, etc.) - only possible for long-term volunteers

This volunteer project is your chance to get to know the Galapagos Islands the way normal tourists are not able to see it. Help to preserve this unique spot on earth and to fight the problems of mass tourism.

The Location

San Cristobal is one of the two main islands of the archipelago of the Galapagos Islands. The island has an airport and a harbor, as well as a small town and several small villages. The capital of Galapagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, is located on the southwestern tip of the island. Near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno there are tourist sites such as Cerro Tijeretas, a breeding colony for frigates, and a statue of Charles Darwin, which marks the original site where he first landed on the Galapagos Islands during the second voyage of the HMS Beagle.

Also, worth seeing is La Lobería, a colony of sea lions, only about ten minutes by bus from the city. There are also locals who offer boat trips to take visitors to two nearby diving sites. Popular photo motifs on the island are the many sea lions, cliff crabs, seashells, frigate birds, mockingbirds, rays, Bahama ducks, moorhens, Darwin's finches, brown pelicans, blue-footed boobies and last but not least the famous Galapagos giant tortoises. In the hinterland of San Cristobal, small farms grow fruit, vegetables and even organic coffee.

The climate is constant throughout the year and averages 25 °C per day. The rainiest months are from January to May; in the remaining months there is very little rain.

Typical day

Volunteers on the Galapagos Islands are placed on a Hacienda with eco farming activities. The Hacienda owns 30 hectares of land that is part of the Galapagos National Park. This land must be protected and regularly cleared of non-endemic plants. This is to reverse the negative effects that the introduction of non-native plant species had on local flora. Previous volunteers have made a major contribution to current reforestation projects and the results can already be clearly seen. Introduced plants were carefully removed and endemic plants were first grown in the greenhouse and then transplanted outdoors. The volunteers also support various development projects in local communities. Environmental education is very successful here.

The tasks of the volunteers are diverse and mainly have to do with the areas of reforestation, research and community work. Possible works are:

  • Eradication of imported plants (Mora, Guayaba and Superroza)
  • Forestation with native plants
  • Working in the greenhouse and gardens (sowing native plants / planting fruits and vegetables)
  • Supporting the local community (painting schools, cleaning of beaches and parks, etc.)
  • Helping on the Eco Farm
  • Assistance in teaching English, computer skills, sports, etc.

Working in this volunteer project requires physical labor. But you will quickly notice how stress-relieving and good for the soul this can be!

To prevent people from working too hard during the hot midday hours, the working days start early with a hearty breakfast at 6.30 a.m. When the work ends in the afternoon, the volunteers have time to explore the island, relax in the hammocks, chill out or stroll through the harbor.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

After a long day of hard work, evenings are quiet and volunteers usually spend them lounging in hammocks, chatting, listening to music, writing or reading. In your free time you can also go swimming, hiking and play sports. It's possible to do diving and snorkeling. The local volunteer coordinators are always available for assistance and guidance for the volunteer projects and spare time activities. There are times when there are no other volunteers, while on other occasions there are large groups, so be prepared for the variety of people that you will meet and work with.

The Galapagos Islands offer many opportunities for cultural activities and escapes into the nature. You have the possibility to observe the Island's endemic wildlife, animals that do not exist somewhere else! Things you can do include:

  • Sunrise and Sunset Spectacles: Wake up early to witness the magical sunrises, and in the evening, find a serene spot to soak in the vibrant colors of the sunset over the endless horizon. Each sunrise and sunset in the Galapagos is a masterpiece of nature.
  • Beachside Bliss: Spend your leisure hours relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Galapagos. Sink your toes into the powdery sand, take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, or simply bask in the sun's warm embrace.
  • Aquatic Adventures: The marine wonders of the Galapagos are yours to explore. Snorkel in the company of playful sea lions, swim alongside majestic sea turtles, and marvel at the kaleidoscope of colors within the underwater world. Your encounters with marine life will leave you spellbound.
  • Photography Expeditions: Capture the essence of the Galapagos with your camera. The islands provide a wealth of photographic opportunities, from extraordinary wildlife shots to the mesmerizing landscapes. Each snap is a story in itself.
  • Boat Voyages: Embark on captivating boat tours to explore neighboring islands, each with its own unique charm and ecosystem. Keep watch for dolphins gracefully gliding alongside your boat and the majestic presence of whales in the deep blue.

Why with us

There are many persuasive reasons that speak in favor of South America Inside when it comes to selecting your perfect provider of language, study and volunteer travel abroad. Following, we have prepared a short summary so that you can get us to know a little better.

  Multifaceted Offers
Over time we have developed new programs to offer a wide array of work abroad opportunities to our clients. We have been pioneers in launching new exchange programs, as we have been the first in offering Work & Travel/Working Holiday and Farm Stays in Chile and successfully introduced these programs into the market back in 2005. Since 2012, we are the only agency to offer this type of program in Costa Rica.

  Insider Advice
Despite living in the modern era of the internet, we know that reliable and competent advice is still an important criterion for most of us. At South America Inside, you will find the benefits of an internet provider and an independent travel agency. We will be glad to pass on our extensive knowledge and regional experience.!

So, we are located in Chile, on location, and we know everything that is going on first hand. We know what it is like to live as a foreigner in South America and will be happy to assist you in making your stay unforgettable!

  Independence

We neither depend financially nor structurally on any other company, language school, association or organization. Therefore, we are able to give personalized information in accordance to your needs and availability.
