    About the program

What to expect as a teaching volunteer with Akwaaba Volunteers

We offer placements for volunteers looking to teach and help with education at our partner school, Future Leaders. The focus of this school is to give children from disadvantaged backgrounds the education they deserve. Without the school, almost all the children would be unable to afford an education at a government school, therefore the education we provide is vital to these kids and for their future.

The classes range from Nursery to Year 9 and you have the opportunity to choose which class you would like to work with. We will help you to decide based on your previous experience (this is not compulsory) and your confidence. You will work alongside our local teachers in the classroom to help plan lessons and to make learning fun for the students. The school offers a of subjects including English, Maths, French, Science, I.T, History, Religous and Moral education, creative art and a local language and you can help teach as many of these as you wish. As well as bringing new ideas to the classroom you will also work one on one with some students selected for you. These students are usually struggling with their education or may not have started school until they were older so need help to catch up with their peers. During one to one sessions our focus is on reading, writing, ABC's and Maths.

Our volunteers provide support to the school, donations help us to enroll even more out of school youth into full time education and provide them with the resources they need to stay in school including pens, pencils, school uniform and shoes and books. Not only do we want to give every child the education that they deserve, we also want to improve the standard of education in the school.

Our education project is one of our most popular projects. Not only do you get a hands on experience, you can see first hand the impact you can have on somebody's life in a relatively short period of time. The children in school are always eager to learn, their enthusiasm is infectious and they love to work with our volunteers. Most of our volunteers love to see how much the students are progressing and become great friends with the wonderful teachers working at the school too.

We do expect our volunteers to come to Ghana ready to immerse themselves in the culture and make the most of every opportunity that is presented to them. Whilst no qualifications are required we love volunteers who bring enthusiasm, are willing to be open minded and get involved in the projects from day 1. Ghana is one of the most friendly countries in the world and we make sure you get to make the most out of your time here. Volunteer placements run from Monday to Friday, school hours are from 8.30am - 3pm, teaching starts at 9am. We keep the weekends free for you to travel, chill out at the beach or pool or explore more of the city.  Our amazing in country team will be there for you every step of the way and will support you both at your projects and the volunteer accommodation.

We work closely with our community and work in areas based on the needs of the community. Through our projects we aim to empower, develop and create sustainable futures to alleviate poverty and change lives.
At Akwaaba Volunteers we understand that choosing your volunteering experience may not be an easy decision, so we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help put your mind at ease.

    Why Volunteer with Akwaaba Volunteers?
Volunteering requires giving up your time and money to help people less fortunate than yourself. However, we always find volunteers leave us having gained considerably more than this in life experience. At Akwaaba Volunteers we provide everyone with the experience of a lifetime, immersing volunteers in local culture and activities, and providing the opportunity to make a direct impact in your child’s chosen programme. Akwaaba Volunteers provides a safe and exciting way to volunteer in a new country at the lowest possible prices as we strive to change the future for the next generation.

    How safe is Ghana?
Ghana is the most peaceful country in West Africa with some of the friendliest people in the world. However, it is imperative to us that our volunteers feel comfortable at all times: our volunteer accommodation is in a secure compound, has 24 hour staff supervision and there is always a member of staff on site. Our volunteers are met at the airport upon arrival and accompanied to all placements and excursions that they wish to attend in order to provide them with the best experience possible while feeling, and being safe.

What age do you have to be to volunteer?
Volunteers are welcome from the age of 17 upwards. Most of our volunteers are aged between 18 – 30 but we welcome anyone wishing to take a career break or that simply want to make a difference.

    Can I volunteer with friends?
Of course you are more than welcome to book with friends or as a group. If you wish to do so we would advise letting us know in our booking form so that we can try and organise your placements and living arrangements to be together.

What do i need before travelling to Ghana?
You will need a visa to enter Ghana. Obtaining a visa can be done online by visiting the Ghana high commission website. We will send you a letter from Akwaaba Volunteers inviting you to Ghana to attach to your visa application. This process can take up to 3 weeks so make sure you apply well before your travel date. You will also need your yellow fever vaccination and we recommend bringing anti malaria medication too but you can discuss this with your GP or travel clinic.
