About the program

Despite primary school being free in Bali, and the children having a thirst for education, many families struggle with providing the children with adequate learning supplies in Primary School with the additional financial burden of fees in High School. Most parents are farmers and struggle to make a sustainable living past that which they have been born into. By aiding local teachers to provide engaging classes and contributing to local schools giving children a step up educationally, volunteers provide the tools and building blocks for an empowered learning experience.

With Bali's thriving tourism industry, there is a high demand for locals who can speak English. Although children have the opportunity to learn English at school, their teachers are often Balinese and may not provide enough practice for them to develop their conversational skills or hear fluent English speakers. However, Balinese children are very eager to learn and are a pleasure to teach.

As a participant in this project, you will spend one to two hours each morning preparing lessons and around three hours in the afternoon teaching at a local elementary or high school. While you have the freedom to decide what to teach, there is a general syllabus to follow and examples of successful lessons from previous participants to inspire you.

The goal of this project is to make learning English a fun and engaging experience for students. You are encouraged to be creative with your teaching methods, incorporating games, songs, art, sports, and music. If you are new to teaching, consider partnering with other participants in the classroom. Two to three teachers can work together to build confidence and better manage the class, whose enthusiasm often leads to great excitement. Your role is to inspire and encourage, but most importantly, to make the experience enjoyable for both teachers and students.

Location

Ubud, pronounced ‘oobood’ is located centrally in the heart of Balinese culture. Far removed from the tourist crowds of Kuta, it is famous as an arts and crafts hub, and much of the town and nearby villages seems to consist of artists’ workshops and galleries and a general feeling of well being. Ubud is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to this unique destination – scenic rice fields, small villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples, palaces and rivers.

*Please note

All participants for the Education, Teaching, Construction, and Turtle Conservation projects, regardless of the program duration, will now be required to apply for a C6B Social Cultural visa prior to arrival. As we cannot be the sponsor, the easiest way to get the C6B visa is to use an online agency.

Participants who have a Visa On Arrival or an E-Visa on Arrival will not be able to participate in these projects. Participants who only attend the culture, adventure, and yoga weeks will be accepted to join the programs with a Visa on Arrival.

Typical day

Monday
On Monday after early morning breakfast, the lesson plans are drawn. This will consist of preparing lessons which could be on various educational subjects or something you would like to teach the children. After lunch, you would set out to the local school and teach them the lessons which you have already prepared. Later in the evening, return back to the centre to give us your feedback on your first day of teaching.
Tuesday to Friday
From Tuesday to Friday, after you complete your early morning breakfast, you can work on developing lesson plans for each day for a couple of hours. After lunch, you can then leave to your assigned school to work with the students who will be eagerly waiting for you. Once you teach them the lessons you have prepared and engage in a few activities, then you can return to your accommodation and have dinner.
The teaching plan will be confirmed again every Friday. The program can be changed depending on the school plans and other school activities for the students. Your participation would require around 5 hours a day of your time; 2 hours preparing the lesson in the morning and 3 hours teaching in the afternoon.

*Schedule possible to change due to the project and community needs at the time. Volunteer flexibility and adaptability is important to a positive volunteering experience.

Ubud Outskirts (Pejeng) is approx. 15 min drive from Ubud. We’re talking pigs, chickens, roosters crowing…. This is a real Balinese experience! Standard accommodation will be in shared bedrooms in dedicated volunteer guest houses in the outskirts of Ubud, within genuine local Balinese communities. A free shuttle to Ubud exists 4 times p/week, otherwise taxi’s are super cheap especially when sharing with your new volunteer mates. Living conditions are comfortable and clean, with fans in the rooms. A minimart/grocery store is 5 minute walk. You can expect regular interaction with locals where you can practice your new found language skills. You can expect to share a room with between 4-8 other volunteers. The bathroom is shared and has hot water and western toilets.

*For couples or those wanting more privacy, there are upgrade accommodation options available

All volunteers have access to a swimming pool (10 min walk from volunteer house), which can be used for a fee of approx US$3. There are also several gyms nearby. There are many ATM’s in Ubud centre. Wi-Fi is available at the volunteer guest house. Internet cafés are also nearby.

*All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

*Accommodation may be in our local centre or in close proximity, depending on availability and time of year.

Food & Beverages

As a volunteer in bali, you’ll receive 3 traditional meals each day on weekdays and 2 meals on weekends (breakfast and dinner). Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and volunteers can expect dishes included nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables), mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables),  or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soy beans).

Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee will be available at the volunteer house. Purified water is available in the volunteer house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.  If volunteers wish to eat out in Ubud, there are a large numbers of restaurants and local warungs (restaurants) to suit all tastes and budgets. There is also a western café in the village for fresh fruit juices, fresh coconuts and sweet treats. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply so we can make arrangements for you.

About the project

IVI are a non profit org with 28 years experience providing responsible volunteer placements in 15 countries worldwide. We help you connect with inspiring opportunities

Meet your organization

Involvement Volunteers International delivers positive social change to developing communities and vulnerable populations through local, national & international volunteering.  Our projects empower the skilled & un-skilled to catalyse the efforts of local partners in creating a better world.

WHO WE ARE

Founded in 1989, IVI is a pioneer of overseas volunteering.  Back when there was no internet and phones were a luxury in many parts of the world, we traveled to developing countries in search of credible NGO's in need of manpower and global volunteer resources.  Some of the many relationships we forged are utilized to this day.

We are passionate about volunteering and giving back to society and in particular developing communities which are less fortunate than us.  In this way, we combine travelling with volunteering to help people make a positive impact overseas.

SOCIAL EXPERIENCES
All of IVI’s projects have a strong social element at the core.  With more manpower (& womanpower!) we can truly catalyse the efforts of our local partners.  This means you're sure to meet loads of like-minded people from all parts of the world.   This type of experience truly broadens your understanding of the world and yourself, opening your heart to new enlightened ways of thinking .   With your new found travel companions, you'll have plenty of opportunity to explore and have fun!

Our projects create a unique platform to experience the true heart and soul of a destination rather than simply the tourist areas.   We'll involve you in meaningful & responsible volunteer work that really benefits the local communities.

AFFORDABLE VOLUNTEER TRAVEL
As a non profit org, we are not motivated by shareholder profits.  Our fee structure is fully transparent to ensure volunteers hard earned money is going directly to the areas where it is most needed.  It is vitally important to us that the presence of volunteers has a positive and sustainable impact on the local communities we work with.

We charge a one off US$275 application fee per volunteer to cover the running of IVI including administration overheads, project inspection costs, marketing, and salaries.

The program fee starts at $150 p/week and goes straight to the in country management to cover arrival airport transfers, on the ground coordination, orientation, accommodation, meals, in country 24/7 project support, project development, donations and related administration costs.

In comparison to many of our competitors, our programs are incredible value.

SAFETY & RESPONSIBLE PROGRAMS
With approx 80-90% of our volunteers being single young female travelers, volunteer safety is of the utmost importance.  All of our projects include a dedicated 24/7 in-country management support contact as well as a dedicated placement manager pre/post journey.  This ensures you will be cared for every step of the way.    The local teams are highly experienced and qualified to manage emergency situations.

All IVI projects have been personally inspected to ensure the standards meet necessary guidelines for quality and safety.  In addition, we monitor and maintain communication with local embassies to oversee potential issues in order to notify volunteers and their families accordingly.

Our Australian team are available 24/7 and only a phone call away.

Our responsibility also extends to the local people which is why volunteers working in childcare related fields must provide a criminal background check before they travel.   Our ultimate goal is the long term development of the communities we work with, hence we work closely with our local partners to ensure that projects are needs driven and sustainable.

SUPPORT

From your very first inquiry, right through to your welcome home, you'll have the same dedicated volunteer manager at every stage.  We are experts in the field and will provide you in depth insights about what to expect and how to prepare to ensure you have an amazing experience overseas.  Every project includes a detailed welcome pack which provides all aspects needed such as in country contacts, what to pack, cultural values, basic language guides and much much more.

On arrival at your destination, you'll be greeted by one of our in-country team and in many cases 1 week orientation is provided to help ease you into the way of life and ensure you're equipped with the right customs to ensure a successful volunteer abroad experience.

FUN!
Volunteering abroad is quite possibly the most rewarding experience you will have in your life!   We know this not only through our own experiences, but through the testimonies from thousands of volunteers we have successfully placed worldwide over 27+ years in operation.  Volunteering overseas is not only rewarding.   It's fun!   You're meeting new people, you're seeing new sights, and you're expanding your understanding of yourself and the world.  You're experiencing something real and life changing in many ways...
