About the program

Why Our Program is Important

In many communities around Kisumu, children have limited access to structured physical education and swimming instruction, which are essential for fostering health, safety, and confidence. Drowning prevention is a critical issue, especially in regions near bodies of water where children often lack water safety skills. Our program seeks to address this gap by providing children with structured lessons in swimming and physical fitness, empowering them to enjoy and safely engage in physical activities while building self-esteem, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle.

What the Program is About and the Volunteer’s Role

Our program offers children the opportunity to learn swimming and engage in physical education activities that promote fitness, teamwork, and well-being. As a volunteer, you’ll assist our team in designing and leading interactive swimming sessions that teach basic water safety, stroke techniques, and teamwork exercises. Additionally, you’ll support our staff in conducting physical education classes that include games, sports, and fitness activities tailored to all skill levels. Volunteers work alongside experienced instructors to create a welcoming, encouraging environment where every child can participate, learn, and thrive.

Where You’ll Work and Live

Based about 20 minutes from Kisumu, a vibrant city along Lake Victoria, you’ll work in various local communities, schools, and partner facilities alongside our staff. Volunteers live in a safe, welcoming volunteer dome house, on the premises of the Korando Educational Centre, guaranteeing a fully immersed local experience.

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll be part of a close-knit team of experienced local instructors, social workers, and other international volunteers, all dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive learning environment for children. Volunteers collaborate with teachers, parents, and community leaders, fostering meaningful connections and gaining insights into local approaches to health and education.

What We Expect from Volunteers and What You Can Expect from Us

We welcome volunteers who are enthusiastic, patient, and passionate about working with children. A background in physical education, swimming, or working with youth is a plus, though not required. Volunteers should come with a positive attitude, adaptability, and a readiness to support our team in a collaborative setting. In return, we provide a comprehensive orientation, on-site support, and 24/7 assistance during your stay, along with training in basic swim instruction and classroom management.

Special Equipment

Volunteers should bring comfortable sports attire, a swimsuit, and any personal items they need. All teaching materials, sports equipment, and safety gear are provided, so no additional equipment is required.

Typical day

Imagine waking up in the colorful dome house, the morning air is crisp, filled with promise, and the first rays of sun filter through the trees, casting a golden light onto the skylight. Outside, you hear the cheerful voices of kids starting their day at the Korando Educational Centre.

The Volunteer Dome House

All volunteers live together at the Better Me Kenya HQ, located on the secure premises of the Korando Educational Center in our comfortable Volunteer Dome House. This unique building was constructed in 2015 using over 10,000 locally made clay bricks, assembled by local craftsmen under the direction of its originator, Torsten Kremser.

Torsten designed the house as an inspiring "Symbol of Hope" to support the children of Korando.

His vision succeeded when global architecture magazines and media featured the project, kickstarting the one-of-a-kind volunteer experience we offer today.
