About the program

Volunteer in Ghana and help us improve the lives of disadvantaged young children. You’ll assist local teachers and caregivers in our primary schools, high schools,pre-schools,kindergarten, daycare centre, or special needs school. Volunteering with children in Ghana is a great opportunity for you to gain practical childcare experience and learn new skills. Best of all, you’ll be helping where it’s really needed and working on sustainable, long-term goals.

This project is divided into two sub projects which are Teaching and Child Care Supports

Teaching:

Teaching in community schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. Your ideas, your energy, and your presence are exciting for students and invigorating for the teachers and parents. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective, you will also serve or be seen as a positive role models to students, You will be place in one of our community schools where you can choose to teach a class on your own or assist a local teacher till you are confident or ready to teach solo.

You can choose to teach pre-schools (age 1 to 6-years), primary (age 7 to 11), junior high or senior high school. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities which help create a stimulating learning environment. All our community schools are very understaffed this is a common phenomenon in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the need to recruit and place volunteers in communities where there are simply insufficient teachers to cater for the number of children.

You will be effectively placed in rural communities where you will teach solo and assist the few teachers available to teach basic causes like English, Mathematics, Science, French, Spanish, creative art, drama, music, and Computer science  from per-schools(1-year to 6-year), primary(7-year to 12-years), junior high or senior high schools.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to the following below;

>> Prepare lesson notes

>> Organize learning materials

>> Develop a teaching method

>> Teach classes through lecturing, discussions and demonstrations

>> Discuss output and methods with fellow teachers and supervisor

>> Access the performance of the students through work assignments, etc

>> Organize recreational games with students

Note: If you think you cant teach in a classroom with many children you can have one -on -one teaching lessons with one of the children who is lacking behind the other children.

You will receive assistance from us regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum. There will be a Teaching Guide book to assist you in your daily work with the children. You can bring along teaching materials and new teaching ideas, picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Classes are generally in session five days a week from 8am to 1:30pm. You have the rest of the day to yourselves; you can explore the community with the other volunteers.

Pre-school and Child Care Supports:

This project focuses on early childhood development and learning through play. Your work will help us achieve our goals of promoting literacy, numeracy, and hygiene practices among young Ghanaian children.

This project is ideal for anyone who wants to help where it’s really needed and improve the lives of young children. You’ll gain practical experience of working in childcare. It’s also the perfect project to help you develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and planning.

If you have loads of energy, take a playful approach to life, and enjoy the antics of little ones, childcare volunteering in Ghana is definitely for you. No experience in childcare? No problem! As a volunteer working with children in Ghana, you’ll support the local teachers and caregivers and have Dream Africa Care Foundation staff members close at hand to help guide you along.

Help teachers pay attention to children equally

Classes are often full beyond capacity, so teachers and caregivers don’t always manage to attend to each child throughout the day. You will play a huge role in being an extra pair of hands and eyes to help pay attention to children who need it most on any given day.

Give teachers and students a break from regular class routine by offering to lead a fun creative lesson. This could include arts and crafts, reading, or even introducing them to a new game. After classes end and before their parents collect them, you can help children with their homework or arrange sports activities outside.

Work with other volunteers

One of the best things about joining one of our volunteer programmes is the fact that you get to meet other volunteers from all over the world. Make the most of this opportunity by sharing ideas for activities, lessons, and games you can play with the children. You can also share these ideas with placement staff who can add them to their existing class routine to add a bit of variety.

Present hygiene awareness workshops

Some of the children you will work with may never have learned about the importance of basic hygiene. You can help improve this by teaching them how to brush their teeth properly and to wash their hands regularly throughout the day. Make this fun with songs, games, and little class challenges.

Assess children and identify specific placement needs

One of the ways in which we keep track of the children’s development and the specific needs of placements, is through specially designed checklists. We will train you on how to use these checklists. You will assess the status of each child on a daily basis in areas related to:

  • Numeracy
  • Literacy
  • Fine motor skills
  • Emotional abilities
  • Social skills
  • Hygiene

Definitely glad I did this! There are a lot of great things to say but here are some things to be aware of when forming expectations- -it's best to do the medical project if you are already trained (maybe pre-med). You get dropped off in a department of your choosing but then are completely on your ...
