    About the program

This conservation project is Zimbabwe’s only dedicated primate conservation facility, purpose-built to support the ongoing care, rehabilitation and eventual release of primates. The sanctuary has an open-door policy to all wildlife species in need of care and has taken in rare and endangered species such as pangolin and vulture, as well as zebras, bush babies and birds.

The focus remains the protection and rehabilitation of primates, who are the often-forgotten victims of the human-wildlife conflict.

Primate Conservation in Zimbabwe - our mission
The project’s mission is for there to be no captive primates in Zimbabwe, and the focus of the sanctuary is wildlife rehabilitation, release and education. It has a successful and well-documented release programme and has relocated many captive baboons and monkeys into the wilderness of the Matopos National Park – one of the country’s largest and most unspoilt areas. Other smaller animals including pangolins, servals, zebra, ostrich, birds and bush babies have been released into a Phase Two release site in a local wildlife haven.

Volunteering is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the sanctuary family and contribute to an important conservation cause. The experience will be life-changing.

This project is ideal for self-motivated volunteers who are willing and able to be flexible with activities and timings. The work at the sanctuary will depend largely on what animals are resident and their particular needs. With rescues often happening at odd times and animals arriving during the day, it is vital that volunteers are adaptable to often last-minute changes in itineraries. Be assured that your role at the sanctuary is extremely important and the more you put in, the more rewarding the experience will be.

    Volunteer Work

Sanctuary volunteers are involved with a diverse variety of tasks, which could include some or all of the following activities:

Primate conservation and small animal care:

    • Work hands-on with wildlife orphans and vulnerable animals
    • Raise baby and juvenile primates, from bottle feeding (often through the night), to bush walks, troop reintroduction and eventual release
    • Work with a range of species including zebra, ostrich, owls, raptors and bush babies, plus a range of domestic animals and birds
    • Assist with food collection, preparation and feeding, encompassing herbivores, carnivores and omnivores
    Behaviour enrichment:
    • Experience the joys of accompanying primates (and usually a few other special guests!) on bush walks, stimulating them to explore their natural habitat, forage, play in water, jump and interact as a group
    • Build toys, platforms, playgrounds and other enrichment objects
    • Become part of the troop as you engage and interact with young monkeys and baboons
    • Work with animals who are not current candidates for release due to mental or physical issues
    Rehabilitation and release:
    • Learn about the rehabilitation process and how it applies to a variety of small animals
    • Play a part in individual animal's release strategies
    • Monitor released animals (on foot, by vehicle and on horseback)
    • Join the veterinary team when rescue work is carried out (subject to location and conditions)
    • Undertake snare sweeps and boundary patrols of the release sites
Volunteering is a unique opportunity to completely immerse yourself in a new country and culture, experiencing day-to-day life in Africa first-hand – all while giving back to an important conservation cause. We guarantee your experiences on the programme will be life-changing!

    About the project

Conservation Travel Africa provide meaningful and responsible volunteer programmes throughout Southern Africa, working with dedicated local organisations and individuals.

    Meet your organization

    Who we are:

Conservation Travel Africa is dedicated to bridging the gap between wildlife conservation and community development. We use responsible tourism and unique volunteer experiences to raise awareness and support for the long term preservation of Africa’s wildlife and the well-being of local communities.
Our company was founded by four friends who shared a vision to restore Africa’s wildlife and wilderness areas to their previous abundance, and to establish safe areas where communities and wildlife can thrive together.

    Our goals:
We believe that wildlife-based tourism, and in particular volunteer tourism, has a huge part to play in the delivery of solutions to the human-wildlife conflict and can help slow or reverse the critical decline of many of our iconic animal species. Volunteer tourism enables local communities to share the financial and cultural benefits which come from overseas visitors, and exposes volunteers to real life situations. We believe that responsible tourism can ensure the protection of wildlife areas for future generations.
The projects our volunteers are involved with existed prior to the rise of voluntourism, and were not set up simply to entertain travellers. As projects have developed and volunteers have joined, their input has enabled them to become more effective. All our projects have long term environmental or community principles.

    Our team:
We are based in Southern Africa, giving us first-hand knowledge of local opportunities and enabling us to keep on top of the work which our programmes are performing.
Our dedicated team, based across Southern Africa, work hard to ensure that all our projects are sustainable, meaningful and fun for volunteers. Our partners are reputable, internationally renowned individuals, charities and conservation organisations. Through our network for programme partners, we have access to some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife areas and most experienced conservation professionals.
We do not work with programmes who do not have their own strict animal welfare standards and are proud of our wildlife credentials. We do not work with projects which exploit animals for tourism, and work with international organisations to fight against this practice. Specifically, we do not offer programmes which support captive lion breeding, lions walks or cub petting.

    What projects do we offer?
We have a rigorous vetting criteria for our programmes, and only send volunteers to projects which really need their help. We are mindful that volunteering is a two-way street, so, in return for your input, you will get to experience some of Africa’s most breathtaking scenery, witness amazing animal interactions and have a truly life-changing experience.

    Where do we work?
We offer projects across Southern Africa; in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique. Our specialism is Zimbabwe, as this is where our founders were born, but we are very proud of all our project partners.

They were learning invaluable skills, while we had an incredible experience. The babies were going to be a part of a larger troop once they were strong enough and then all ...

The interactions and bonds we formed with the animals at the sanctuary made this experience magical!
