    In a bid to support basic girls education our area, we are partnering with Namawa primary school to improve basic Education and promote learning among pupils in rural communities. The program seeks to work with individuals who are passionate at inspiring young minds and a committed to ensuring that every child achieves their potential. The primary school teaching Assistant and Instructor will be posted in our Partner community Primary schools in Butaleja district in Eastern Uganda.

    As a primary school teaching Assistant, you'll support teachers to develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives. You'll facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with pupils, keeping your learning resources organized and creating a positive learning environment in the classroom. You will contribute to develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude.

    You'll help teachers assess and record progress and prepare pupils for national tests and link pupils' knowledge to earlier learning and develop ways to encourage it further, challenging and inspiring pupils to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding.

    The volunteers will work with the local team in Butaleja District in Eastern Uganda and will be expected to share experiences support teachers at Namawa Primary School.

    • Reading, Writing and Speaking English.

    We work Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 5:30pm although sometimes it depends on what needs to be accomplished. Typical working days start with staff meeting to review the tasks at hand including following up on the unfinished ones and planning for the week. After staff meeting teachers go into classes and follow the routine of school time table and lunch is served at 1:00 pm at the school. 

    However flexibility is very important at this level depending on circumstances


    Free-time activities

    After work, volunteers are encouraged to do some sports, visit down town among. Our staff will help the volunteers book activities according to their choices.

    Over the weekends there are social events like the transitional dance exhibitions, community Films and walks. Volunteers can also choose to visit the beach, hiking among others. Feel free to ask what you would like to do and we will work towards fixing it. 

    Volunteers will participate in Sports activities in the community and will visit Amphitheatre to watch traditional Dance

    For a better experience of an African village but with comfort, all our Volunteers are accommodated in our local community home where they live with other family members and volunteers become part of the family. We have semi permanent simple community houses where the volunteers will live with other family members. 

    Because its a local community with limited access to electricity, the houses have solar for only lighting and charging phones/tabloids/cameras. Some houses have a cemented floor and the walls are made of bricks and other houses are made of grass thatched roof but professionally designed to provide comfort to the guests. The choice is yours. There is a shared pit latrine and shared bathrooms constructed outside the houses. Volunteers are free to come with camping tents to be used in case of community camps/trips when necessary. There is a wide, green compound (Except dry seasons) with a number of fruits like oranges, mangoes, pawpaws, jack fruit, avocados among others. 

    Volunteers are encouraged to carry their bed-sheets, Bed covers/blanket, pillow, bathing Towel and other personal items. Volunteers are requested to share a rooms with another volunteer or if they come in groups or family etc.

    The school is located about, 10 minutes by motorbike from the accommodation (residence) place.

    Volunteers are encouraged to come with any key scholastic materials of their choice to use while teaching including Learning games boards, among others.

    Food & Beverages

    AT THE RESIDENCE 

    While at the residence, the volunteers will share local food with the host family members, where the volunteer may participate in preparing, cooking and serving local foods within the family especially during her free time and weekends. 

    Local foods like Posho, millet, sweet potatoes among others will be the main food especially while up-country during your stay but once in a while we will have modern dishes although we encourage that the volunteers should try to get used to local foods as much as possible to enable them have a better experience of Africa.

    An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.

    Details on arrival

    We accept volunteers throughout the year however the volunteer is free to stay as long as he/she wishes. For this particular placement we are open to receive applications as soon as possible. 

    We do not meet your costs of airport pick up from the airport however we can and always support our volunteers to plan or arrange a cab/taxi to pick them from the airport to office. Our staff in charge will also be available at the airport to welcome you to Uganda and navigate you through to the office and place of residence.

    Where we work

    Our main office is in Kampala city in Uganda and regional community office in Butaleja district in Eastern Uganda. 

    We work with mainly schools in central Uganda and both schools and communities in Eastern and some communities in Western Uganda. Uganda is located in the East African region bordering Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Southern Sudan. Its a stable country with good weather and tourist sights.
