About the program

Our organisation is community based and centered established with the aim of promoting the well-being of people living in hard to reach areas and therefore we are basically an institution serving the community. For us to ably change communities positively, we need to use appropriate strategies that can promote community participation and involvement for social change.

As a community and Youth Engagement associate, you will help communities to bring about social change and improve the quality of life in their local areas by working with them to identify their needs, opportunities, rights and responsibilities. Plan with them on what they want to achieve and implement appropriate action. Develop activities and services to generate aspiration and confidence with full involvement and participation of community members.

You will also act as the link between communities and a range of other local authorities and partners such as the police, social workers and teachers, local and international organisations.

While working with the local team you will actively engage communities in making sense of the issues which affect their lives, setting goals for improvement and responding to problems and needs through empowerment and active participation.

The possible tasks will include among others the following.

  • identifying community skills, issues and needs
  • ensuring that local people have their say
  • developing new resources in dialogue with the community and evaluating existing programmes
  • building links with other groups and agencies
  • helping to raise public awareness on issues relevant to the community
  • preparing reports and policies
  • raising and managing funds
  • developing and implementing strategies
  • liaising with interested groups and individuals to set up new services
  • mediating in matters of conflict
  • planning, attending and coordinating meetings and events
  • encouraging participation in activities
  • challenging inappropriate behavior
  • General administrative duties.

IN KAMPALA CITY:

While in Kampala city, our volunteers will be hosted by partner families and in most cases these families belong or are families where our staff and local volunteers live. This means you will live with our staff and local volunteers. We are working on establishing an independent volunteer house will be cater for accommodation of all international volunteers. You will be allocated a conducive room, bed and mattress during your stay. Most of the bathrooms and toilets are inside the house.

IN EASTERN UGANDA:

For a better experience of an African village but with comfort, all our Volunteers are accommodated in our local community home where they live with other family members and volunteers become part of the family. We have semi permanent simple community houses where the volunteers will live with other family members.
Because its a local community with limited access to electricity, the houses have solar for only lighting and charging phones/tabloids/cameras. Some houses have a cemented floor and the walls are made of bricks and other houses are made of grass thatched roof but professionally designed to provide comfort to the guests. The choice is yours. There is a shared pit latrine and shares two bathrooms constructed outside the houses.
Volunteers are free to come with camping tents to be used in case of community camps/trips when necessary. There is a wide, green compound (Except dry seasons) with a number of fruits like oranges, mangoes, pawpaws, jack fruit, avocados among others.

Volunteers are encouraged to carry their bed-sheets, Bed covers/blanket, pillow, bathing Towel and other personal items. Volunteers are requested to share a rooms with another volunteer or if they come in groups or family etc.

Our offices are located about, 10 minutes by motorbike from the accommodation (residence) place.

Food & Beverages

AT ALL RESIDENCES

While at the residence, the volunteers will share local food with the host family members, where the volunteer may participate in preparing, cooking and serving local foods within the family especially during her free time and weekends.

Local foods like Posho, millet, sweet potatoes among others will be the main food especially while up-country during your stay but once in a while we will have modern dishes although we encourage that the volunteers should try to get used to local foods as much as possible to enable them have a better experience of Africa.

Meals at Office.
Most cases while at office, we have our lunch meals at office both in Kampala and up-country office. We mostly make our meals and different volunteers are assigned the roles to support in shopping, preparing food, cooking and serving. We do this as family and team work.
