This placement offers an ideal opportunity for nurses or aspiring nurses to shadow and assist qualified and experienced professionals across various departments within hospitals in Tanzania. 

It is a vital for addressing critical nursing care needs in low resource countries. We tackle challenges of limited access to nursing care, inadequate resources, healthcare personnel and high burden of tropical diseases.

Through our program volunteers play crucial role in supplementing local healthcare efforts, providing much needed support and gaining invaluable experience while helping. Medical care is a basic human right, and making it accessible for all is essential.

Volunteers will primarily work in our collaborated hospital and clinic to fulfill the needs for more hands towards providing health services depend with the level.

Working on our health projects offers a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to become familiar with the challenges and health issues of developing countries and low resource facilities. All our hospitals and clinics are government approved. 

The work environment is way different from the one you are used to work at home. You need to be open minded and able to deal with the poor health care options that are given. The hospital is located in the city of  Dar es salaam, 20 minutes from volunteer house. 

This project is open to everyone with Nursing care interests or nursing background and who wants to help make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people in Africa in the field of medical.

Available departments:

We have a number of departments who would appreciate your help. you can choose to combine different departments at the same time. You will be working with supervisor nurse who will give you full orientation to familiarize with given department and roles to help.

  • General medical ward ( internal medicine)
  • Emergency and accident department
  • General surgery department (ENT,orthopedics)
  • Maternity and midwifery department( labor & delivery)
  • ICU department 
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology, 
  • pediatric department

Volunteer work:

This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in your field in a different culture where practices is different  to what you're used to at home. We have a variety of Medical placements available in Tanzania. You can work in a variety of difference medical departments, where you can either assist or shadow the staff members. The type of work you will be allocated will depend to an extent on your own abilities and capabilities, which is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety. It range from teaching/training for nurse students to hands on experience.

You will be involved in the day-to-day running of hospitals directly assisting the doctors and nurses. If you are planning to specialize in a particular field of medicine in your studies, we can arrange to place you in a relevant department to ensure that we benefit from your knowledge in your field of study and you also learning from our local professionals. This project is open to anyone who wants to help improve the lives of the Tanzanian people and passionate in nursing career.

Your roles may  include some of the following 

  • wound dressings under direct supervision of nursing staff
  • Teaching other nursing students in hospital 
  • Assisting doctors in procedures such as blood collection
  • Recording vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature measurements (if competent)
  • Supporting patients with mobility between service points
  • Providing general assistance to medical staff as needed and as expertise allows
  • Performing tasks such as weighing patients and
  • Assisting with infant/adult weighing
  • Observing procedures, 
  • Helping ward activities 
  • taking care of patients arriving for out-patient care or on admission 
  • Changing bandages and monitoring recovery,

What to expect:

The health facilities is different from home country this will open your mind and perspective about healthcare in developing countries. Our organization also run healthcare outreach programs. Where we visit local communities to provide free health services to the underserved communities. We provide health education, basic prevention of non communicable disease like Diabetes, hypertension and malaria also encourage them about health seeking behaviors. This offer a wonderful opportunity for volunteers and students to be acquainted with the existing community health issues and challenges of delivering health care in developing country like Tanzania. Volunteer has to come with his or her scrub and tools to use in hospital.

Typical day

You will be attached to the hospital here in Dar es Salaam city, in the busiest government hospital where you will be able to attend morning rounds, and participate in hospital ward activities and theater, under supervision of the local nursing officer.

You may be given supervised charge of a group of patients for the day and either observe or assist in managing the care and needs of those patients for the day. Your day can be either very hectic and extremely challenging or slow and very quiet. You will need to be open minded, motivated, pro active, resilient and work well in a team in order to get the best out of your experience. 

In the morning after breakfast you will go to the hospital with the other volunteers. You can choose which department you want to volunteer in. You can choose to work in a different department each week so that you can experience everything.

Basically;

07:00 Breakfast is ready 

08:00 Report to placement /hospital 

14:00 Placement ends but you are allowed to continue !

The rest of the day will be yours to relax and enjoy what the city has to offer you!

You will be attending the hospital Monday to Friday, during the weekends you will be free to explore.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect during your free time. It’s not just about the rewarding work at the hospital; there’s also plenty of fun and bonding with fellow volunteers. Here’s a taste of the exciting activities they get to enjoy:

  • Safari in Mikumi National Park: Volunteers often go on thrilling safaris in Mikumi National Park, where they can spot elephants, lions, and other incredible wildlife in their natural habitat.

  • Trip to Zanzibar: A trip to Zanzibar is a highlight, offering beautiful beaches, historic Stone Town, and the chance to experience rich local culture and cuisine.

  • Visit to Mbudya Island: A visit to Mbudya Island provides pristine beaches and clear waters, perfect for a relaxing day of swimming and sunbathing.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Airport Pickup at Julius Nyerere International Airport

Both pick up is included in the package, the pick up is at (Julius Nyerere International Airport-Dar es Salaam) 

Our organization team will come to pick you and great you at the airport, and then drive to host family/ volunteer house where will be your new home with local family and other volunteers, driving may take 30 to 40 minutes to the host family. Then you will have full orientation and ready for your new adventures in Tanzania far away from home.

We provide breakfast and dinner  in working days, our menu typically includes variety of options to accommodate different dietary preferences including  vegetarian, vegan, and other special dietary requirements. 

If you have any special dietary needs, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.  Drinking water will be provided in volunteer house. Additionally, lunch is provided on weekends

Details on arrival

You can join the program anytime of the year. Upon your arrival as a volunteer with our organization, your journey begins at airport  (Julius Nyerere International Airport - Dar es Salaam). Our dedicated team member will be there to warmly welcome you and ensure a smooth transition. 

Look for our representatives (actually have our logo T-shirt, or someone Holding your full names on a paper) who will be ready to greet you as you exit the airport on arrival Exit.

We recommend that volunteers book their flights to (Julius Nyerere International Airport - Dar es Salaam), as this is where our pickup service will be available. Our team will be ready for you.

From the airport, you'll be transported to your accommodation (host family/ volunteer house) , where you'll have the opportunity to settle in and prepare for your time with us. 

During this period, our team will provide you with a comprehensive orientation, ensuring that you are well-acquainted with the local area, cultural norms, safety measures, and your upcoming tasks. The next day we will take you to the office where you will familiarize yourself in terms of more concerns. 

We understand that the journey to a new place can be exciting yet overwhelming. Our aim is to make your arrival and transition as comfortable as possible so that you can focus on the enriching experience ahead.

Tanzania Health Opportunities (THO) is a non profit, non partisan; Volunteer organization registered NGO( Non governmental organization) operating in Tanzania since November 2020. Registered in Tanzania: Our registration number is 00NGO/R/1506. We address the shortage of healthcare access and seeks to promote the general wellbeing and the development of Tanzania communities through humanitarian work. 

Our team consists of passionate local individuals dedicated to empowering communities to access quality healthcare through healthcare volunteers.

At THO, we  provide community health services and clinical experience to volunteers through integrated medical outreaches, education, and research to ensure the best care is provided to every community. We seek sustainable solutions in healthcare education.

We operates in Tanzania, a country located in East Africa known for its diverse wildlife, including Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, Zanzibar island and the Serengeti National Park. We currently base in Dar es salaam a coastal region of Tanzania along the Indian ocean. Tanzania is home to vibrant cultures and communities, offering rich experiences for volunteers.

While Tanzania is generally safe, safety measures are in place to ensure the well-being of volunteers. volunteers are advised to adhere to safety provided by our team during orientation. Special health requirements may include vaccinations and precautions against tropical diseases like taking ant malaria prophylaxis, Yellow fever vaccine and covid vaccination.
