About the program

The Medical Program in Paje, Zanzibar, is situated in close proximity to The White House of Zanzibar, where volunteers will be accommodated.

Infectious diseases, prevalent in many parts of Africa, are a significant focus of the clinic's efforts. Volunteers will assist in diagnosing and treating conditions such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, STDs, typhoid fever, and others. Previous experience with tropical infectious diseases is advantageous due to the challenging nature of diagnosis.

Additionally, the clinic houses an obstetric department providing labor and delivery care. With limited resources, medical staff work diligently to support women during childbirth and postpartum recovery. Volunteers may have the opportunity to assist in deliveries and provide postnatal care under supervision.

As the clinic serves a disadvantaged community, patients present with various healthcare needs, including non-communicable diseases, trauma, burns, and domestic abuse cases. Volunteers, including qualified medical professionals and students, play a crucial role in supporting medical staff across departments.

Tasks vary from basic wound care and medication administration to assisting with deliveries, trauma assessments, and potentially surgeries. Volunteers will also participate in patient education on disease prevention and treatment plans, with assistance from permanent staff for translation as needed.

Flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to explore alternative treatment solutions are essential traits for volunteers in this setting. Contributions and ideas for improving healthcare practices and hygiene are encouraged, aiming to enhance the clinic's operations and patient care.

Typical day

A typical day begins at 8:00 AM at the hospital, where volunteers are assigned their departments or work areas for the day. Patients are often already lined up outside the hospital at this time, and volunteers work alongside the staff to assist them as needed. Around 10-11 AM, there's usually a short break for tea to recharge, followed by continued work until lunchtime.

As part of our volunteer program, all three meals are included in the accommodation price. Volunteers can return to The White House of Zanzibar, located nearby, for lunch. Depending on individual agreements with the hospital and volunteer preferences, volunteers can choose to return to the hospital after lunch for afternoon shifts or take the afternoon off. Evening and night shifts are also available for volunteers who wish to participate.

About the project

Boresha Maisha Projects seek to provide communities with education about sustainable solutions to their problems through the work of experienced volunteers.

Meet your organization

We wish to create possibilities for communities and individuals to grow and develop in order to create a better future. We seek to provide communities with education about sustainable solutions to their problems instead of fast and easy solutions. How do we plan to do that? By continues education provides by experienced individuals with knowledge and specific education to a certain field. And this is where we need you!

Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. We are searching for strong individuals, who wish to bring their knowledge and education and pass it on to communities and work places in Arusha, Tanzania. We believe that this education and sharing of knowledge is the way to solve many of the problems, the developing countries in the 21st century are facing. But we need you to help us with it.

Boresha Maisha Project emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community. Having seen the bad effects of "voluntourism" many of the volunteering platforms create, we wished to find more sustainable projects, where the impacts will last and not just be forgotten with the next arriving volunteers. We wish to create platforms specifically for volunteers with the appropriate skills and this way ensure that the volunteers will be in surroundings where they feel safe and have an expertise. Look through our projects and see if we have one, that fits you. They get updated regularly, so don't worry if you don't find the one, you were looking for.

Established in 2017, we’re an organization driven by progressive ideas and bold actions. Help us break the circle of "voluntourism" and projects who are ruining communities and families instead of keeping them together.
