About the program

The fishing village project is based in Teshie-Fishing Village next to the sea. Fishing and smoking of fish is the main occupation of the adults of these families. However children of these families are mostly seen roaming about in the community without any schooling. Two young men in the community who were fortunate to have education decided to assist these families who cannot afford to take their children to school by organizing free classes for them aimed to teach them how to read and write.

The news about these new free classes quickly spread through the community and children started the classes in their numbers. Dream Africa Care Foundation upon hearing the news decided to support this idea of the young men.

Dream Africa Care Foundation has been running the project since 2010. We have started a community school for the children in the village and a evening tutoring to help the children with their home works since 98% of the adult population in the fishing village cant read and write.

Volunteering in our community schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. Your ideas, your energy, and your presence are exciting for students and invigorating for the teachers and parents. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective, you will also serve or be seen as a positive role models to students, You will be place in one of our community schools where you can choose to teach a class on your own or assist a local teacher till you are confident or ready to teach solo.

You can choose to teach pre-schools (age 1 to 6-years), primary(age 7 to 11), junior high or senior high school. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities which help create a stimulating learning environment. All our community schools are very understaffed this is a common phenomenon in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the need to recruit and place volunteers in communities where there are simply insufficient teachers to cater for the number of children. You will be effectively placed in rural and urban communities where you will teach solo and assist the few teachers available to teach basic causes like English, Mathematics, Science, creative art, drama, music, and Computer, from per-schools(1-year to 6-year), primary(7-year to 12-years), junior high or senior high schools.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to the following below:

  • Prepare lesson notes
  • Organize learning materials
  • Develop a teaching method
  • Teach classes through lecturing, discussions and demonstrations
  • Discuss output and methods with fellow teachers and supervisor
  • Access the performance of the students through work assignments, etc
  • Organize recreational games with students

You will receive assistance from us regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum. There will be a Teaching Guide book to assist you in your daily work with the children. You can bring along teaching materials and new teaching ideas, picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Classes are generally in session five days a week from 8am to 1:30pm for the morning school and 5pm to 7pm for the evening tutoring. You can choose to teach only in the community in the morning or the evening tutoring or do both.

We will also like to have you to help teach children in our orphanage how to read and write, this is optional if you have free time from the community school and you want to help out at our orphanage your participation will really benefit the children you work with, while gaining valuable skills yourself.
