    About the program

    Join local partners to redistribute leftover food from local supermarkets among social organizations, poor families, homeless people, and other people in need!

    Did you know that 262,000 tonnes of food are wasted annually in Catalonia? Food waste occurs across the food industry, with 40% wasted in production, 5% in distribution, 40% in homes, and 15% in the restaurant sector. This is where you can make a difference!

    About the program

    Did you know that 262,000 tonnes of food are wasted annually in Catalonia? Food waste occurs across the food industry, with 40% wasted in production, 5% in distribution, 40% in homes, and 15% in the restaurant sector. This is where you can make a difference! 

    By helping these initiatives, you can give surplus food a new purpose and ensure it reaches those in need. A network of centers collects excess food from local restaurants, supermarkets, and cafes, organizes it, and redistributes it among families, the elderly, and the unhoused.


    What to Expect

    • Food Collection: Collect perishable food from supermarkets and donations.

    • Meal Preparation: Prepare breakfast, lunch, or dinner and serve meals to unhoused people.

    • Warehouse Work: Assist with loading, unloading, organizing, and quality control of food donations.

    • Food Processing: Treat food for freezing and future cooking.

    • Special Recipes: Cook special recipes to maximize the potential of each food item and create quality meals for distribution.


    Daily Tasks

    • Food Collection: Pick up food from restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets.

    • Meal Preparation: Prepare and serve meals.

    • Storage Organization: Assist with storing and organizing food donations.

    • Quality Control: Perform quality checks on collected food.

    • Meal Distribution: Hand out meal boxes to families, the elderly, and the unhoused community.

    Typical day

    After the initial orientation day, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day. 

    A typical schedule is as follows:

    07:00 - 10:00 a.m. : Breakfast at the volunteer accommodation

    A typical schedule is as follows:

    07:00 - 10:00 a.m. : Breakfast at the volunteer accommodation

    10:00 a.m. :  

    • (1) Travel to the Fight Food Waste place to join the local staff and begin work on your project or
    • (2) Explore the city, relax, attend Spanish language lessons or enroll other activities if you have an afternoon project.

    01:30 p.m. : Lunch is served at the accommodation. In the morning you can grab a “packed lunch” to have in the city or at your placement.

    02:00 - 07:00 p.m. : 

    • (1) Travel to the  Fight Food Waste place to join the local staff and begin work on your project or
    • (2) Explore the city, relax, attend Spanish language lessons or enroll other activities if you have a morning project.

    08:00 - 10:00 p.m. : Dinner at the accommodation. After dinner you will have the remainder of the evening free to relax and use as you wish.

    Minimum Age: 18 years

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    What’s included?

    - Pick up at the international airport in Barcelona (when arrival is on the weekend) & public transportation transfer to the accommodation - Sunday 

    On Sunday, the ImpacTrip team will be at the airport waiting for you with a big sign and a smile on their face! :)

    If you arrive prior to Sunday, you will still be able to receive an airport pickup and our team can transport you to the accommodation, but you will need to pay an extra fee for this service.

    - Accommodation at a dormitory at a social hostel, female dormitory or mixed dormitory with a private bathroom; bed sheets are provided

    - Two meals a day everyday: Breakfast and lunch (Local style. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and meals for lactose-intolerant are also available upon request)

    - Shared use of the common room, outdoor area, and free WIFI

    - Orientation event on arrival (including an introduction to Spain and Spanish culture, volunteer experience, an overview of programs, practical information, and safety guidelines)

    Airport Pickup at Barcelona-El Prat Airport

    On Sunday, the ImpacTrip team will be at the airport waiting for you with a big sign and a smile on their face! :)

    If you arrive prior to Sunday, you will still be able to receive an airport pickup and our team can transport you to the accommodation, but you will need to pay an extra fee for this service.

    Accommodation

    You will stay accommodated in a social hostel that belongs to a Foundation with a social and environmental mission. The Hostel is located in the city center. The hostel has a wonderful terrace where volunteers can rest and spend some quiet time with friends after touring around Barcelona. There is free WIFI internet connection.

    There are various common areas such as dining room, living room, room balconies, outside areas and a laundry. The facilities of the hostel are modern and comfortable all rooms have their own bathrooms. The rooms are spacious and with natural light and there are 32 adapted beds in a building without architectural barriers.

    The Hostel is a building located in a commercial and very safe area, near the FC Barcelona stadium. A very well connected hostel (near 2 metro lines, 14 regular bus lines, tram and 2 night bus lines).

    Food & Beverages

    We will provide breakfast and lunch at the hostel everyday. The hostel restaurant offers meals with fresh local ingredients everyday for all volunteers in a very Spanish style and they are prepared to accommodate most diet restrictions such as vegan and vegetarians, gluten-free and lactose intolerant.

    For dinner, you can either explore the city or use the kitchen at the accommodation :)

    Travel Insurance
