    About the program

Our volunteer program focuses on horses and farm life, offering individuals the opportunity to experience and contribute to the daily activities on our farm. While there are many enriching aspects to this program, we also encounter several social issues that we aim to address. Let's explore some of these challenges and the solutions we implement:

    1. Lack of Awareness: One common social issue is the lack of awareness about the importance of horses and farm life in our society. Many people may not fully understand the benefits and value that these aspects bring to our communities. To address this, we actively promote educational initiatives and engage with schools and local organizations to highlight the significance of horses and farm life.

    2. Limited Access: Accessibility can be a significant barrier for individuals who are interested in participating in our volunteer program. Economic constraints, transportation issues, or geographical limitations may prevent some individuals from accessing our farm and experiencing the benefits it offers. To tackle this, we collaborate with community organizations and implement outreach programs to ensure that our volunteer opportunities are accessible to a diverse range of individuals.

    3. Inequality and Discrimination: Social inequality and discrimination can also be prevalent in the horse and farm industry. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. We actively promote diversity and inclusivity by providing equal opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to participate in our volunteer program. We also implement anti-discrimination policies and ensure that our volunteers and staff are trained on inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.

    4. Animal Welfare Concerns: The welfare of our horses and farm animals is of utmost importance. We address animal welfare concerns by implementing strict guidelines and protocols for the care, handling, and treatment of our animals. We also provide comprehensive training to our volunteers on animal welfare practices, ensuring that they have the knowledge and skills to contribute to the well-being of our animals.

    5. Environmental Sustainability: Farm life is closely connected to the environment, and we recognize the importance of sustainability in our operations. We strive to minimize our ecological footprint by implementing environmentally friendly practices such as composting, water conservation, and we are working on having renewable energy sources.

By actively addressing these social issues, we aim to create a volunteer program that not only provides individuals with enriching experiences but also contributes positively to our community, promotes inclusivity, and fosters a deep appreciation for horses, farm life, and the environment.

Our volunteer program offers a unique opportunity to engage with horses and experience farm life. Volunteers play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations and care of our horses and the farm. Their responsibilities include:

    1. Horse Care: Volunteers assist in feeding, grooming, and exercising the horses. They help with mucking out stalls, cleaning water troughs, and maintaining the overall cleanliness of the stables.

    2. Farm Maintenance: Volunteers help with general farm maintenance tasks such as repairing fences, cleaning barns, and maintaining the grounds. They also assist with landscaping, gardening, and ensuring a safe environment for the animals.

    3. Assisting with Lessons and Therapy Sessions: Volunteers may have the opportunity to assist with horse riding lessons and therapy sessions. They provide support to instructors and therapists, help prepare horses for sessions, and ensure the safety of participants.

    4. Event Support: Volunteers assist in organizing and supporting various events held at the farm, horse camps, educational workshops, and community outreach programs. They help with event setup and coordination.

    5. Community Engagement: Volunteers act as ambassadors for our organization by promoting our mission and programs within the community. They may participate in outreach activities, interact with visitors, and share information about the benefits of horse therapy and farm life.

Overall, our volunteers play a vital role in the well-being and success of our horses and the farm. They contribute their time, skills, and passion to create a positive and enriching experience for both the animals and the community.

Volunteers will be living in the apartment attached to the main house, and a new facility is being built to accommodate an additional six people.

Volunteers will collaborate with Chrissy, the ranch's head, and the staff of Rancho Ventura.

Volunteers can expect to contribute their time, skills, and dedication to various tasks and projects at the ranch. They can expect a supportive and inclusive environment where their efforts are valued and appreciated. On the other hand, volunteers can expect guidance, direction, and coordination from me as the head of the ranch, along with the opportunity to learn and grow through their volunteer experience.

Airport Pickup at Juan Santamaria International Airport

    Airport Pick-up Information:

We provide airport pick-up services for volunteers arriving at the designated airport. Our pick-up service operates between 6 am and 7 pm, ensuring that volunteers can be safely transported to the Ranch during daylight hours.

Upon arrival, volunteers will be greeted by a member of our team holding a sign with the Ranch's name for easy identification. Volunteers are requested to provide their flight details in advance so that we can arrange for a smooth pick-up process.

For volunteers arriving outside the specified pick-up hours, we can assist in coordinating alternative transportation options with trusted drivers to ensure a safe journey to the Ranch.

Please note that the farm's gates are closed from 10 pm to 5 am for security reasons. Therefore, we recommend booking an overnight stay in the area and arriving at the farm the next day during the pick-up hours mentioned above.

Our goal is to make the arrival experience as seamless and comfortable as possible for all volunteers joining us.

    Accommodation

    Accommodation Description:

Our accommodation option offers a cozy small apartment tailored to accommodate up to three volunteers. The apartment features a single room furnished with comfortable beds, which are provided with fresh sheets for a restful sleep. Sheets are changed once a week to ensure cleanliness and comfort throughout your stay. A fully equipped kitchen allows volunteers to prepare meals and enjoy the convenience of home-cooked food.
The apartment will receive a light cleaning once a week to maintain its cleanliness and ensure a comfortable living environment for the volunteers. However, individuals with consistently cluttered or disorganized spaces may be temporarily reassigned from their scheduled daily activities to assist the cleaning staff in their responsibilities.
Costa Rican septic and sewer systems are not able to process bathroom tissue (toilet paper) or any other items. To ensure the proper operation of our toilet facilities, do not flush toilet paper or any other item down the toilet. All items should be discarded in the provided trash can.

For added convenience and peace of mind, the farm owner's house is located next door. This proximity ensures that volunteers are never alone and assistance is readily available for any inquiries or emergencies. Additionally, outside the apartment, there's a half bathroom available for quick and easy access.

A full bathroom is located outside as well, perfect for shared use. Given our location in a hot climate, the outdoor full bathroom does not have hot water, ensuring a refreshing experience in the warm weather.

To stay connected, internet access is provided, allowing volunteers to keep in touch with loved ones and stay updated during their stay.

It's an ideal setup for volunteers seeking a comfortable and homely environment during their time with us.

Meals at the Ranch are served daily according to the following schedule:

After finishing their meals, volunteers are kindly asked to wash their used dishes, cutlery, and cups in the designated area.

For safety reasons, volunteers are not permitted to enter the Ranch kitchen area, which is located inside the owner's house where the daily meals are prepared. Instead, a communal kitchen facility is located in the common area of the apartment for their use.

In addition to our provided meals, volunteers have access to additional food options on the Ranch. Our small convenience store, located just a 20-minute walk away, offers basic grocery items for volunteers' convenience. Whether it's grabbing snacks, drinks, or other essentials, volunteers can easily make a quick trip to the store to stock up on necessities.

For those looking to savor local flavors, our small country restaurant is situated just a 10-minute walk from the Ranch. While the restaurant operates exclusively on weekends, volunteers can indulge in delicious meals prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients during their leisure time.

Additionally, to accommodate any specific dietary preferences or cravings, a Ranch staff member is available to organize a supermarket run to the next town once a week. This ensures that volunteers have access to a wider variety of food options and can stock up on any specific items they may need.
