About the program

Ghana is graced with a rich variety of flora and fauna, but sadly, a lot of it's wildlife is fast becoming endangered due to pollution and erosion. With waste management failing across the country, the ocean and beaches are heavily polluted with rubbish and now local villagers of the coastal region find their homes seriously in danger due to erosion. Villages set back from the coast are now based directly on the beach and cabins are swept away by the sea daily.

Most residents have nowhere else to go, and the state of the beaches is now having an impact on wildlife too. Large sea turtles, long threatened with extinction in other regions, set up home on the beaches of Ghana between September and January, but now they are threatened by the environmental pollution, causing their numbers to drop even further, and fast.

You’ll be working in Axim, an endangered coastal region, home to a small oasis - a paradise beach resort. The largest of its kind in Ghana, this 45-hectare resort has been committed to environmental protection, education and sustainable development for over twenty years. The resort has become an indispensable institution for the local population, with its vital educational work teaching locals about the importance of conservation, and providing jobs in the area.

Details on arrival

Before you even depart, our team in Munich will take you through every step of the process, from answering your questions about the programme, through to advising you where to go for your visa. We are here to help you and to ensure that you feel totally comfortable (and prepared!) before departing.

Ahead of starting, the project accepts new arrivals every Wednesday and Sunday, so flights and transfers can be planned around these days.

For your project work in Axim, you’ll first land in Accra, the capital of Ghana. If you arrive very late, it makes sense to spend your first night in Accra, as you can then relax and continue your journey on to Axim the following day. We do offer an optional extra where you can get picked up in Accra, transfer to our chosen guesthouse for a night and then transferred the next day to your onwards travel. For your onward journey to Axim, you have two options: Book (with our help!) a domestic flight to Takoradi (around £50 to £70) or a bus (£10). The bus ride takes about 4.5 hours and the bus station can easily be reached by taxi.

Your orientation will take place in the first few days, after your arrival at our Axim site. This consists of a welcome to everyday life in your project, a briefing in the house, code of conduct rules and a tour of the area where the project will take place. You'll also learn about some of the work that goes on within the project. Our on-site team will show you to your room in a bungalow in the "Volunteer & Staff Village" and give you time to set up. The rest of the day you have time to look around the grounds, meet your new colleagues and to enjoy the six-kilometer-long sandy beach!

I had decided on the beach project - a good decision as it turned out: My two project leaders on site were the Ghanaians Joseph and Edith, both in their early twenties. In the morning we went to the beach for an hour to clean it from washed up garbage. Then we went to the conference room. Here, for ...
