    About the program

In this program we work with women who live in slum area and comes from Below Poverty line families outskirts of Jaipur, in the desert state of Rajasthan. With the overall aim to educate and provide training for women who live in slums, and those who come from BPL (Below Poverty Line) families.  Every day girls and women come to our center and here we teach them formal and informal education provide them vocational training etc..

In terms of education here we teach them basic English reading and writing language classes(Spanish, French, etc)  Mathematics, Hindi and Computer  are offered. English has become a global communication language, building a bridge between many areas of the world. It is so important for these women to see themselves and others as being able to take part in such global conversation.

We provide training in many of the areas that these women will likely find work. We organize stitching, drawing henna and cooking classes for these girls and women so with the help of these skills even start their own business so in near future they are not depend on their husband or Men.

We are also provide time timely a counselling service and established a friendly atmosphere for women and girls so they feel a safe place to share their issues and talk freely about anything.

In our women empowerment program we also offer you the chance to teach young girls & boys at the age from 3 to 15 years old. In This program you get a wonderful opportunity for participants to work with both women & children in one program. We works to break the cycle of poverty that diminishes these girls and children’s life chances. Without a good education, their economic prospects will be limited as those of their parents, sentencing them and their future children to a similar life of hardship. So we mix the program is that most of the children that come to our center are the children of the women who also come here and it is better for the young ones to be with them. Children who live in slum areas are not able to go to school because of their families are very poor and also there is no awareness in regard to education for children.

At the project volunteers will help us in various ways such as they can teach the women and girls English, maths and computing, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and also assisting in their moral development how they can behave they also do women health and hygiene lessons art and craft, and using their skills to develop new ideas so in near future with the help of this girls and women can get some work or even they start their own small business etc. They can prepare some educational games and sports activity too for these girls overall development.

    Volunteers Role

We want  to address the education deprivation among the marginalized community living in the city of Jaipur.

You can support women in many ways, by using your skills and interests and according to their needs and interest.

In this program volunteers are involved in some activities just like:

    About the project

SHRESTHA strives to improve the lives and life-chances of orphans, slum and street children in Jaipur, north-west India.

    Meet your organization

    Who We Are

In Jaipur alone there are about 50 thousand children on the streets. Studies and observations about street & slum children in several cities including Jaipur in India highlight the magnitude of this problem. They are mainly in the formative group of 6 to 15 years and most of them are illiterates and school dropouts.

Society for health, Education and Vocational Training for Slum,Street, and Poor Orphan Children (SHRESTHA) was established under Rajasthan Society Registration Act.1958 with the overall aim and objectives of helping and supporting children especially Slum, runaway, orphans and street children in Jaipur.

SHRESTHA is successfully implementing its various activities and programs through which children are being provided with and supported for fulfilling their Educational, Socio-Psychological Counseling, STIs, HIV/AIDS Counseling, Skill Building, Vocational Training, Rehabilitation and Referral requirements.

We work with children and their families living in an established slum area on the outskirts of Jaipur, in the desert state of Rajasthan. In this slum area, the families are from different states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. They live in houses made with mud or in less substantial tent-style homes. Families tend to be fairly large, with typically five or six children, so there’ll be an average of about eight people in each household, sharing one single room.

People in the slum area do not have a fixed job. Instead, they’ll do garbage collection, shoe polishing, begging and lots of similar work to try to generate an income. They generally do not earn enough money to fulfil their daily needs. Often, parents are not able to provide food and clothing for their children or even medicine when children fall ill.

The children want to go to school and study like ‘normal’ kids, but their parents don’t earn enough to send them to a good school. These children have lots of talent and are eager to learn but their family situation means they’ve often no choice but to work along with their parents.

    Breaking the cycle

Shrestha works to break the cycle of poverty that diminishes these children’s life chances. Without a good education, their economic prospects will be as limited as those of their parents, sentencing them and their future children to a similar life of hardship.

SHRESTHA is getting support and motivation from various concerning government departments and other agencies Our project aims at identifying underprivileged children especially from slum areas, streets & orphans and then providing them with formal as well as informal education, Health & Hygiene education, Vocational training & working for their Personality development so as to create opportunity for these children to develop themselves as responsible citizens of the country & further helping them to live into main stream society.

SHRESTHA is dedicated to helping impoverished children lead healthy, fulfilling lives and reach their full potential into adulthood – and you can help.
