Free-time activities

Amidst the Kozjak and Mosor mountains and surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, just a few hours away from one of the other European capitals, the small peninsula where Split is located has a lot to offer to every visitor and traveler.

Croatia, as a Balkan nation is a must stop country for anyone who chooses to visit eastern Europe in a meaningful way. On the one hand it has a rich historical heritage full of monuments classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the other it is a country that is still recovering from a political war, in the group of countries with the highest number of people living below the poverty line.

With its charming ancient towns and villages, beautiful beaches and more than a thousand islands, its history has produced a very rich cultural diversity, shaped by Roman and Turkish, that is, Mediterranean and Eastern European influences. These historical heritages mark the different regions of Croatia. Between Istria, Dalmatia and the center of Croatia, the gastronomy, lifestyle and accents can change a lot, making the country very diverse and interesting. Split, the second biggest city, has a specific Mediterranean influence that makes it especially welcoming, cosy and warm. With its palace just on the seaside, Split brings a peaceful and fresh atmosphere that invites you to come and stay for a while.

Accommodation

Volunteers on the Marine Conservation project will be accommodated in a hostel in the centre of Omis which is a 10 minute walk from the volunteer placement and the restaurant for meals. Volunteers should expect to share a room with up to 7 other volunteers, depending on the availability the volunteers will be separated by gender. The bathrooms are common but are separated by gender. Bedding and towels are provided by the hostel. Local staff do clean the accommodation throughout the week, though volunteers are required to keep their rooms tidy.

Private rooms for Marine Conservation volunteers can also be arranged at an additional cost. Please contact us or your Program Manager for more information and pricing. All accommodation upgrades are subject to availability.

Food & Beverages

Volunteers are provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day in a restaurant which is a 10min walk from the accommodation. Breakfast will alternate between choices of cereals, butter, marmalade, cream cheese, ham, milk, coffee, juice and bread. Lunch is prepared in the morning and packed into take-away boxes so the volunteers can have a meal on the boat. Dinner is provided in the restaurant and volunteers have the choice between a meat, fish, vegetarian and pizza option.

Tap water is safe to drink in Croatia and while we encourage volunteers to bring a reusable drink bottle to minimize the consumption of single-use plastics, bottled water is readily available if you prefer. You should budget approximately $5 per week for this.

Honestly, I was surprised, when on the website it shows photos of so many dogs, animals, it turned out I was working at a cat sanctuary.
