About the program

Introduction:
Dinka School is a Pre and Primary school with class one to seven and a nursery level and Pre- unit level. We educate 200 children and take care of 50 children in our boarding facility.
We established the school in 2014 and are proud to say we have a beautiful school with happy people!
We would love to welcome you to our team and work together in developing new programs and techniques.
We are located in Manyire village close to Arusha and children around the school and staff member's children are being sponsored.
We have 9 classrooms, a dining hall/ multi functional hall, dormitories for boys and for girls, an administration block with offices, library and ICT room. We also have the volunteer house, a garage and store and 3 sport fields (basketball field, volleyball field, football field)
Our team exists out of gardeners, cleaning ladies, mama's, cooks, drivers, security, teachers and office staff. During your stay with us, the academic master will guide you together with the head master.

Which social issues do you face?
We are located in the village and our children around us are being sponsored by the school. There are so many children in the village we don't sponsor yet.

And how do you try to solve these issues?
Because we would like to give so many more children the opportunity to come to school at Dinka,  we are always fundraising through our Dutch foundation, Stichting Dinka.

What is your program exactly about?
Educating children from poor backgrounds and to make sure they have a bright future ahead of them.

What is the role of the volunteer?
The role of the volunteer is to assist the teachers in classes and to guide/ implement co-curricular programs and subjects like sports, music, theater, drama, reading, writing, dance, gardening, cooking etc.!

What do we expect from the volunteers?
To follow the same timetable as our teachers and to implement our programs and new programs into the daily lives of our students.

What can the volunteers expect from you?
We would like to guide you from even before you come to Tanzania so you get the most out of this amazing experience !

Do the volunteers have to bring special equipment?
We would like you to bring your own laptop if possible to work with when you are here and we have a wish list which we can send to you if you would like to bring donations for the school.

Typical day

Together we can design your volunteer experience before you come to Tanzania, prepare your schedule and your timetable.

You will be able to assist in different classes with children of different ages.

A day program starts at 08:00 and ends at 15:15.

Your timetable will include time whereby you join school assemblies or team meetings in the morning and you will assist in different classes, but in between, you move around to go to specific classes where you teach (with assistance of the Tanzanian teacher). Co-curricular programs such as international lessons, arts lessons, sports lessons, music lessons, reading program, gardening, cooking etc. could be taken over by you but you will always have assistance from the class teacher. NECTA (the Tanzanian curriculum) can only be taught by the Tanzanian teachers but they very much appreciate your assistance ! The best classes to assist are Nursery, Pre Unit and STD. 1 and STD. 2.

We have two breaks at 10:00 for tea/ porridge and at 13:00 for lunch. The school ends at 15:15 but there are tuition classes for STD. 4 and STD. 7 until 18:00 and there is homework time and playtime for our boarders until 18:00.
You are welcome to assist but many volunteers like to rest after a full day from 08:00 to 15:15 :) !

As a volunteer at Dinka School we welcome you to share your ideas, talents and hobbies. Together we can design your volunteer experience before you come to Tanzania through email and create a rough timetable.

You can assist in the classes, you can teach co-curricular activities, you can give workshops or design a reading level program for the children.
You could teach hockey,Tennis, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Frisbee, jumping rope, Gymnastics or biking.
Or you could take over the arts program for the time you will be here, teach ICT or French or set up a pop up lesson in a foreign language.
You can also teach music or dance or read with the struggling students.
You could set up a new program in gardening, cooking, sewing, taking care of animals or bring other interesting programs to our attention !
We are more than happy if you come up with your own ideas !
You will be able to assist in different classes with children of different ages from Nursery class- Pre Unit and STD. 1 to STD. 7.
You can also assist our matrons with taking care of the children who live at Dinka School in our boarding section!
You could arrange a special sports day or arrange a school trip!
If you like organizing and cleaning up we are also welcoming volunteers to assist us in organizing toys, books, classrooms and store rooms :) !
