About the program

Participate in our on-going educational project - Academic reinforcement tutoring for leveling purposes. Our program is vital for rural Amazonian communities because the public degenerative educational system fails local students by not delivering adequate lessons and at times is absent due to state corruption, poor infrastructure and Covid-19 inconsistencies. As a result of Muyuna Foundation's academic diagnostic, we identified that local High School students from the Yanayacu River are currently performing at a primary school level.

Be part of our team focused on delivering weekly interactive tutoring sessions to a wholesome group of High School students who critically need academic reinforcement and are currently attending these sessions as an extracurricular activity. We are seeking volunteers interested in coming to the middle of the Amazon Rainforest to our headquarters, the Muyuna Ecolodge, immersed in the culture and environment to best familiarize yourself with these essential teaching elements to showcase culturally sensibilized tutoring lessons. We have an educational team composed of 4 dedicated educators preparing lesson plans, training volunteers to best deliver classes, and accompany volunteers throughout their jungle experience. As a volunteer, your role will be assisting Muyuna Foundation's educational team in creating collaborative lesson plans and assisting tutors in executing extracurricular academic reinforcement tutoring sessions.

We appreciate your interest in participating in rural educational reinforcement in our neck of the woods to assist high school students from the San Juan de Yanayacu community in reaching their grade level before graduation.

Includes airport transfer, lodging, full-board meals and amenities in Muyuna Amazon Lodge

Every week, at the Tamischyacu-Tahuayo Conservation area, volunteers will participate in 5 days of work, 3 guided excursions into the Amazon River and forest, and 2 days of rest. If interested, we can extend your volunteering experience!

Typical day

Volunteers should rise around 6:45 AM. They lodge in one of the Eco-lodge's bungalow's which includes a private bathroom and a screened-in patio. Breakfast is served at 7:00PM and after breakfast, volunteers can energize themselves by hammocking by the Amazon River, or part-take in any of the eco-lodge's amenities such as doing yoga in the yoga room, reading in the library, exploring the river by kayak, immersing themselves in rainforest walking trails, and much more!

At 11:00 the educational team gathers to do strategic planning where a variety of tasks could be carried out, such as, student progress monitoring, grading, meetings, lesson planning, and other tasks that allow us to have quality lessons for the students. These collaborative team work sessions carry on until 1:00 PM when lunch is served.

Although Muyuna Foundation is carrying out other projects, we will prioritize the 2-year on-going Extracurricular Tutoring Reinforcement program during the week. After lunch, around 2:45, volunteers board on a boat with Ms. Stefy or Ms. Eli to go to the San Juan de Yanayacu community where we carry-out the After-school tutoring sessions from 3PM - 5PM Monday-Friday. During the tutoring session, the role for volunteers is to be teachers' assistants in executing the lesson plan, classroom management, and academic monitoring.

Aside from this, the volunteer is welcome, not obliged, in helping out in the other projects Muyuna Foundation is conducting, such as Regenerative Waste Management system development, or botanical garden operations and outreach.

Volunteers come back by boat from the San Juan de Yanayacu community back to Eco-lodge after tutoring, and rest until dinner is served at 7:00 PM. The Educational team will get together after dining around 8:00PM to have a group reflection upon the day's work and volunteers will then proceed to rest for the following day.

Twice a week, volunteers will have days off where they'll be granted the opportunity in enjoying free time in the Lodge, community, and/or go on guided excursions.

About the project

Muyuna Foundation sustains Amazonian community resilience through collaborative social projects and implementing sustainable practices geared towards local development.

Meet your organization

Who we are

The socio-environmental responsibility branch of Muyuna eco-lodge, an international touristic platform with more than 20 years of experience, is managed and operated by their sister non-for-profit NGO: Muyuna Foundation. Dedicated in strengthening resilience with and for communities in the Tamishyacu-Tahauyo reserve, we strive to assure local socioenvironmental stability throughout the trajectory of collective development.

What we do

Alongside our neighbours, together with the international community, we co-create various means of collaboration, centred in local environmental and cultural empowerment to protect the forest and river. We aim to utilize regenerative land management practices, youth development programs, ecotourism, community-based education, and allocation of grants and international funding to sustain socio-environmental resilience in the ACRTT.

The intention we put in our work

  • Establish sustainable projects for the benefit of the community.
  • Encourage environmental and social responsibility.
  • Promote a culture of respect for human rights and nature.
  • Generate fair job opportunities for residents of nearby communities.

Our values

We believe that each community has the potential to improve its living conditions through the creation of strategic alliances, which allow them to develop sustainable projects that contribute to their well-being. We are committed to being an active part of the community so that everyone has the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. We seek to develop in the community critical, reflective and creative thinking skills, foster collaborative work, continuous improvement and above all an education for a sustainable future. We are carrying out tourism, education and sustainability projects in the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Regional Communal Conservation Area as an effort to implement a sustainable development model that takes into account the interests of the community and respect for the local culture
