About the Program
In this program we have children which are kidnapped by
criminal gangs in India and forced into doing child labour, or they are left by
their parents on railway station, bus stations, and next to traffic signals
because of poverty. Some children are sent by their parents to do activities
like begging, vending, selling cigarettes and tobacco, peddling lottery tickets
etc. At the end of the day they give their earnings to their family as the
whole family depends on their earnings.
With the help of our team members and
with the help of police we found these children at bus stations, railways
stations, traffic signal. We bring these children in our center where we
provide them with accommodation, food, education, personality development and
many activities which a child needs for his growth.
In 2006 we were doing this
program in a rented flat but it was sold by the owner and we all were forced
out, but with the help of the government we now have a very big hall for
children to study in, a big hall for them to sleep, with kitchen and a space
for them to play in.
Since the program started we have repatriated more than thousands of children & the number is still going. After repatriating them we keep in
contact with them to see if everything is going alright with these children.
We
run this program with our partner NGO which has local volunteers who take care
of these children. One of our program coordinator will always be there at the
program site to assist the foreign volunteers. Local volunteers are not good in
English so the coordinator helps foreign volunteers in all stages.
Mission of the Project
Our mission is to provide the best care and
protection for these children; to preserve and protect their childhood rights.
To bring them back into society by providing them with their basic necessities
for life.
Role of the Volunteer
You as a volunteer will be involved in
activities such as teaching them basic English and mathematics,
personality development classes. Personality development includes talking about
having a positive attitude towards life, self-esteem, manners, speaking and
behaving in public etc. You will also be involved in activities related to art
& craft work, such as drawing and henna painting. Health education programs
such as the AIDS-awareness program make them be aware of health & hygiene
tips and nutrition. Sports and games have also been organized by volunteers in
order to develop their physical stamina; all these are very helpful in making
their life better and in rehabilitating them.
Project Needs
Children in
the project came here from the kidnapping gangs, some were left by their
parents on railway stations, bus stations so they have a very sad past story.
We need volunteers for this project because having volunteers with them at all
time makes them happy and they feel that they have somebody taking care of them
even if they don’t have parents. We do provide all education materials, food,
accommodation facilities and sports equipment.
