About the program

Working at an children care centers in Ghana is likely to be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of your life. At these centres volunteers  assist in caring for destitute children at the creche and kindergarten,

The day to day tasks include helping at meal times with cooking, cleaning and feeding the younger kids; arranging games and fun activities; helping the school age children with their homework; monitoring the cleanliness of all the children, bathing and getting the younger kids dressed, and teaching good hygiene habits.

Volunteers can also assist with some teaching as many of the school children would benefit from a little one on one tutoring. There may also be basic building and repair work to be done at the centre. Some experience working with children is preferred, as is a responsible, enthusiastic and compassionate attitude. Initiative and self-motivation are important.

Where will I work

This placement is available in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast. All these locations are safe, secure and friendly to foreigners. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose any of the location and volunteers on long stay of more than a month can do the placement in two different locations.

Accra is the capital and seat of government, it has  a lot of beaches and lot of shopping mall stock with a lot of foreign products. Kumasi is the second capital and the garden city of Ghana. It has a lot of historic centers and the biggest open outdoor market in West Africa. Cape coast has beaches and also the historic center for slave trade.

What You Can Bring

There is a lack of playing materials at most centres. Volunteers can bring materials like paints, pencils and pencil colours, crayon, drawing papers, toys etc. Some of these materials can also be found in the local market for ready purchase. Most importantly you bring a big heart and smile.

What we expect from you

You must be passionate about children,  Ready to assist placement staff to take care of children and ability to work with children from all kinds of background and with specific needs and attention.

What you can expect from us

Our staff is available to you 24/7 to give any necessary support. We will assign one staff to take care of your needs.

Who You will Work with

Volunteers work closely with other teachers and staff and report to the head of the centre on assignments and also when you have any issue at the cemtre. Volunteers are also paired with other volunteers if any to work on similar projects.

How Do I Get to the placement

For the first day, volunteer will be taken to the school. Our staff  will show volunteer how to get to the placement, the direction to take, the particular vehicle and the amount to pay for the transportation. This is repeated the next day if volunteer thinks he still can't make it until the volunteer can make his/her way. The same is done for the returning to the home-stay after the school ends.

NOTE: As this program involves working closely with at risk children a four week minimum commitment is required to participate.

Volunteers are advice to connect to the wifi and communicate with the rep doing the pickup, this also helps the volunteer to go through immigration process easily.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay at the Sflig Volunteers house or  with a host family that will be provided by SFLIG Volunteers, which is very safe for volunteers and this will help them to adjust, adapt and know the Ghanaian culture and that of the community intern will be doing the volunteer work. The selection of a host family will deepen on the information that will be provided on the application form the volunteer will fill and submit.

These host families are people who have been investigated and have good record and have good health. There are periodic checks to see if they are still u to standard. Host families are responsible for providing breakfast and dinner everyday. Due to the distance between project area and home lunch can’t be provided and volunteers are advice to go with a snack. The foods served mainly consist of continental dishes comprising rice, chicken, beef, tea, coffee, bread, eggs, soup, potato, oaths, fruits, fish, etc. Local food

That is mainly made from the above, tubers, beans and/or maize is served alongside. It is also very common for an intern to find a familiar dish in restaurants in different cities. Volunteers are provided with well treated water which is purchased from certified producers of hygienically bottled or bagged water.

Volunteers with special dietary needs like vegetarian should let us know, so we can prepare their preferred meal. Those with allergies should let us know too.

During weekends volunteers can make their own special foods or eat in a nearby restaurant or order for any continental food to be delivered to them.

About the project

Solutions for Life Initiative Ghana (SFLIG) connect passionate people seeking to “give back” to the very people whose lives depends on it where there is mutual benefit

Meet your organization

SFLIG Volunteer and Internship program is an initiative developed to improve the lives of children, especially girls from orphanages and broken homes and to provide support to single mothers. Our aim is to improve the lives of people from difficult backgrounds through school enrollment, housing provision, medical care and start-up capital for single mothers. Through these endeavors we hope to alleviate poverty and promote community growth.

We are committed to achieving first six Sustainable Development Goals of the UN:

  1. No poverty
  2. zero hunger
  3. good health and well-being
  4. quality education
  5. gender equality
  6. clean water and sanitation.

We introduce volunteers to our rich hospitality and culture. Ghana cannot be compared to any other country in Africa,
We are dedicated to the concept of volunteering within our organisation. We welcome and celebrate the skills, knowledge and passion of people who are committed to making a change. We are proud to be part of their journey of self-discovery – a journey where, we find, the rewards are tangible and memorable.

SFLIG offers volunteer experiences in many different categories. These include teaching, medical, working with children and creative art centres. Any one of these categories provides the volunteer with countless opportunities to see first-hand the challenges that exist for the less privileged in Ghana and to, more importantly, have a positive impact on the lives of those they meet.

Mission

Our mission is to help connect individuals and groups looking for the opportunity to give back to society to the very people who needs their support where both parties benefit. Volunteers experience new culture and life whiles helping to better the lives of the community.

Vision

We envisage a voluntary journey where volunteers discover themselves and receives more than they give.

Objective

Our main objective is to mobilise resource to educate and empower the less privilege especially women and girls through volunteering and internship support.
