About the program

CAHCC (Charity Association Helping Cambodia’s Children) is a registered Cambodian Charity founded on 12th October 2016. Ministry registration number: 6684. Happyland is a CAHCC community centre based in Takeo Province. We work with young people and need volunteers to join the project that will have a positive impact. We take volunteering very seriously, living and working together 24/7.

With whom you'll be working with

The project is maintained and run by volunteers with the help of local Cambodians. You will be working together with local cambodians and other volunteers. Kris Eakins is the program manager and your contact person.

What we expect

There is always a great need for people with enthusiasm, self-motivation, specialist skills, a good work ethic and BIG HEARTS. There are always things to be done and many different ways you can help us to develop our centre. Long term volunteering is one of the best ways to help.

The Tasks

Tasks include but are not limited to, supporting classes (teaching if you stay for a long period), supervising/playing, organising activities, cooking, cleaning, gardening, admin and IT. The main classes we run are English and computer, alongside free play, arts & crafts and general sports. If you want you can also tidy, clean or do some site maintenance to keep the house, spaces and centre well organised. The most important thing is to be recharged and ready for the start of the new week.

What you can expect

It is best to arrive with an open mind and be willing to go with the flow. Nothing is set in stone here, therefore things are changing constantly. Be open to anything and you will have a great time. It might take a couple days to feel comfortable and to find classes/projects that you can lead or assist with. As long as you bring a positive attitude and good energy, you will start to feel comfortable very quickly. It will take some time to get to know the kids, so don’t expect them all to want to play with you immediately. They will warm up to you, but for some of the kids it will take longer than others.

Good to know

Volunteering with us is also suitable for digital nomads, if they are able to work outside of our opening hours. There is a Wifi café close by which is open during the day. Also at an additional cost, mobile internet is available with generally good signal strength.

The temperature is very warm here. Bring loose clothing and expect to sweat. Drink lots of water. Stay in the shade and it’s not bad. It is scientifically proven that complaining only makes you feel hotter! Bring some mosquito repellent and sunscreen.

Dress code

Dresscode for females:

  • Tight, revealing or sexy clothing is not acceptable and considered as inappropriate.

  • All shorts and skirts must be below mid thigh when teaching children and must cover the knees when teaching the monks and police. Shorts or skirts that just cover the buttocks are inappropriate and unacceptable.

  • All tops must cover bras/ bras straps. Low cut tops showing cleavage, tank tops, shoe string/ spaghetti straps, strapless and see through tops are considered as inappropriate and unacceptable.

  • Women when swimming should keep covered and not wear bikini. Shorts and t-shirt is considered as appropriate swimming gear.

Dress code for males:

  • Shorts or pants must be mid thigh. Tight, revealing or sexy clothing is not acceptable and considered as inappropriate.

  • A t-shirt or shirt must be worn at all times around town and with the children. It is considered offensive for men to not wear tops (unless swimming or for locals within their own family / community) and can cause issues with local authorities.

Typical day

It is the collective responsibility of residential volunteers to:

  • Maintain the centre, keeping all spaces clean and tidy with extra care given to the kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

Typical day description

Please note: This is just to give a general idea to those who have never been to HappyLand, but it is not a strict schedule by any means. Due to the nature of the project and the young peoples’ situation, every day is different. Also alongside the following we might be working on other projects.

8:00 am

Everyone wakes up and together we clean and tidy the communal spaces.

Then we have some breakfast, which you need to provide for yourself (There are a few options close by. If there are specific things you like to eat, it might be better to get them in Phnom Penh before you arrive).

You will get many hugs from fellow volunteers if you bring some special treats to share (e.g. instant coffee, tea/green tea, peanut butter, nutella, cookies, cheese, and jam).

Daily Briefing. Preparing activities/classes for the afternoon, working on other projects and when needed, take some time for yourself.

Every other day we need to buy ice for the cooler. Usually a couple of times per week we need to go to the market to buy vegetables for lunch and dinner.

11:30 am

Prepare lunch, eat, wash dishes, clean kitchen and dining area.

2 pm

The front gate opens.

Facilitate/Support activities and classes.

Play/Supervise

Be there for the kids, animals and your fellow volunteers.

Have fun!

You can clean and tidy spaces, return equipment, feed the animals, water the garden and help to cook dinner.

18:00 pm

Eat and clean up.

After dinner is a great time to chat with other volunteers and talk about the day.

Time to unwind, relax and recharge.

The weekends are free for volunteers to either stay on site or take some free time away!

Free-time activities

In the weekends you can visit one of the many temples and explore the area.

In Takeo city you can go to a swimming pool, eat at a nice restaurant, visit the Takeo market or go shopping.

Services by CAHCC

The fees includes:

- accommodation

- drinking water

- lunch

- dinner

Please note:

-Breakfast is not included.

During the weekend you are welcome to visit other places, but you must still pay for each day.

We recommend that anyone wishing to volunteer for a long period, first commits to one month and then extends their placement here, when they have completed their first month.

It is a challenging environment here and it is not always a good fit for some people.

Also visa requirements in Cambodia mean that if someone wants to stay in the country for longer than one month, they need to extend their visa. Staying longer than two months, then they will need to exit the country and re-enter to get a new visa. It is a good idea for anyone wishing to stay for a long period, to contact one of the many travel agencies in Phnom Penh for advice about this. We can suggest an agency that we use ourselves.

EXTRA OPTIONS (for additional costs)

An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees but can be arranged for an additional cost of $75. Please contact the organization for details.

Non residential option (additional cost)

For those wishing to stay in more comfort, you can stay at a guest house 10km away. A tuk tuk will bring you to and from the project each day. Please contact the organization for more information

Accommodation

  • Basic dorm style accommodation consisting of mattresses on the floor, sheets/blankets/pillows, fans and mosquito nets. The dorm room is at our centre.
  • There is no running water here. We collect rainwater in the wet season and buy water in the dry season. Always keep in mind that you are here for the kids, and that they live in the very same style (most in much more basic conditions than us). Embrace the local Cambodian way of doing things.
  • Cleaning/tidying/organising is always needed and appreciated.

Also the basic dorm at our centre can accommodate a maximum of 3 people. These places are prioritised for previous volunteers and longer term volunteers wishing to have a more immersive experience living in the community.

Food & Beverages

  • 2 vegetarian meals a day. Food for lunch and dinner is provided (lunch only for non-residential volunteers)
  • We eat rice and vegetables for most meals. We cook it ourselves and it is usually very tasty.
  • water
  • The neighbours and kids will offer you some food that you have never seen before and might not know what it is. Try it.

About the project

After School Activity Supporter CAHCC helps children and teenagers from a rural community in Cambodia. They can join English, computer and other classes for free.

Meet your organization

We are a small grassroots project situated in rural Cambodia. Takeo is one of the poorest

provinces in the country and there are many socio-economic issues including but not limited to, poor healthcare, living conditions, sanitation, domestic violence and underfunded schools. From humble beginnings we have continued to grow and establish ourselves in the community.

CAHCC Happyland’s mission is to provide a safe, supportive and educational environment for local young people and their families, living in disadvantaged conditions. It is our intention, through empowerment and inclusion, to enable young people to pursue their dreams, while being positive role models in their community.

All of our daily activities and working practices follow and are inspired by the UN Convention

on the Rights of the Child. Our primary focus is to:

-Empower and safeguard young people.

-Provide opportunities for personal growth and development.

-Facilitate educational support, classes, workshops and activities.

-Promote sustainability and awareness of environmental issues.

-Encourage/support healthy lifestyles, mindfulness and general well-being.

-Encourage inclusion, with an emphasis on positive interpersonal relationships.

-Support basic needs.

-Assist with further education, medical and dental care.

-Engage with the community in a positive and respectful way.

We believe that play, creativity and imagination are important factors in social and educational development. They play a key role in developing self-awareness, self-confidence and healthy self-esteem.

We recommend that anyone wishing to volunteer for a long period, first commits to one month and then extends their placement here, when they have completed their first month.
