    Om programmet

From the metropolis of Phnom Penh to the rural countryside of Banteay Meanchey, we’ll explore Cambodia’s turbulent past and see how communities, big and small, are building for the future. We’ll visit the Killing Fields, immerse in Khmer culture and journey to BanteayChhmar where communities are working to clear land mines and repair rural livelihoods. We’ll interact with innovative community initiatives that exemplify the resilience of a population that has struggled for peace and now strives for prosperity.

Our volunteer programs take a learning-first approach. We combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers can explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions. Here are some of the community partners we work with on this program:

    - Sokha Farm is owned and operated by Sokha Youn and his family. Here, both local and international visitors come together to learn about sustainable agriculture practices near the ancient temple complex in Banteay Chhmar, northwestern Cambodia. Sokha Farm aims to help Cambodians in implementing healthy, eco-friendly agricultural techniques on their farms, which will allow them to more strongly support themselves while also protecting the wellbeing of their communities.

CBT is a group of local villagers dedicated to preserving and protecting the cultural heritage of the area, as well as creating a responsible tourism industry in Banteay Chhmar. The committee consists of 15 members, and currently over 70 villagers are directly involved in the CBT as tour guides, cooks, homestay owners, musicians, etc. Even more are indirectly involved by reaping the benefits that well-managed, grassroots tourism development has in a region such as this.

    Program intinerary

    * This is a preliminary itinerary. The final itinerary may change a little based on the needs of our partners and new opportunities which present themselves. This should give you a really good idea of what the program will look and feel like.

Day 1-3: Orientation in Phnom Penh
Following airport pickups, we'll spend a couple of days exploring Cambodia's bustling capital, Phonm Penh. In a citywide scavenger hunt, we'll get introduced to the sights, sounds, and tastes of this modern yet distinctively Cambodian city. We'll tour some of the city's most beautiful temples and pagodas before visiting the S-21 Prison Museum and the Killing Fields, both potent reminders of Cambodia's recent and turbulent past. We'll make new friends, get to know a few of the city's lesser known sanctuaries, and begin to see Cambodia through new eyes.

Day 4-6: Small Town Temples in Banteay Chhmar
Get ready to go from one extreme to another! After the urban jungle of Phnom Peh, we'll head straight to the Cambodian countryside and the village of Banteay Chmmar. Motos, bicycles, and kuyons filled with farmers returning from their fields maneuver their way around you. Women with colourful checkered krama scarves and children playing outside their bamboo stilt houses are bustling about. This is our first taste of life outside the city, and you'll soon discover how sweet it is!

We'll be staying with the Banteay Chhmar Community-Based Tourism group (CBT), a local cooperative organization dedicated to preserving a huge 800 year old temple located in the vicinity of the village, as well as developing a sustainable local tourism economy. What a wonderful opportunity to explore alternative tourism up close and personal. We'll also get to eat local, seasonal food prepared by aunties and grandmas in our friendly family homestays!

Day 7-8: Bat Caves and Acrobatics in Battambang
Ready for some urban comforts? We'll head to the charming town of Battambang where we'll relax and get cleaned up at a funky hostel. Battambang is famous for its nearby caves, where, in the evenings, we can witness millions of bats gliding through the sky!

If bats aren't your thing, don't worry! We'll also be visiting a unique social outreach program that engages at-risk youth in the area by channeling their energies intro acrobatics and circus arts. It will be unlike anything you've seen before!

Day 9-11: Growing futures in Beantay Menche
Back out amidst small villages and rice paddies and villages, we'll dig deeper into Cambodia's rural landscape with our friends from Ockenden Cambodia - an NGO made of dedicated activists promoting and teaching sustainable, innovative, and disaster-resilient farming in marginalized communities. So, we'll roll-up our sleeves and join them on one of their many ongoing projects while getting an intimate look at the realities, challenges, and promises of rural development in Cambodia.

We'll be sleeping in hammocks, eating out of palm leaves, and spending evenings by the fire listening to Khmer folktales. Here we'll get back to basics and have a truly unique opportunity to connect with the community!

Day 12-13: Disorientation in Siem Reap
Now it's time to celebrate "Disorientation". A staple of every OG program, this is our change to kickback and relax, to relive memories of the program, recap the lessons we've learned, and discuss how to take them home. Then we'll head to the international airport for some tearful goodbyes!

Day 14-15 (optional): Kingdom of Wonders in Angkor Wat
For those with an extra day or two to spend, there is no better place to spend them than the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor! This is the biggest archaeological site in the world and home to dozens of spectacular ancient temple complexes, including Angkor Wat (the biggest religious monument in the world). If you think that description has too many superlatives, just wait until you actually see it for yourself!

Our time at Angkor will bring insight into the fascinating history of the ancient Khmer civilization, as well as a unique outlook at mass tourism vs. the more local, community-based tourism initiatives we've gotten to be a part of. Be ready to have your mind blown with the sheer scale and size of Cambodia's heart and soul!

Note: The cost of this option 2-day extension is $150 CAD or $120 USD.

    Indkvartering

Traveling as much as we do in Cambodia, we’ll take all means of transport from comfy pullman buses to tumbly rickshaws and our own two feet. In Phnom Penh, Battambang and Siem Reap, we’ll stay at clean, safe, and friendly guesthouses while getting our fill of good Cambodian fare at local restaurants and food stalls. When we’re out in Banteay Chhmar and Beantay Menche, we’ll be eating and sleeping in local family homes. We think staying with our community partners is the best way to immerse in Cambodian culture but it might also mean a lumpy bed, a cold shower or spotty electricity/wifi from time to time. Wherever we are, our friends and hosts will help us feel right at home.

    Mad og drikkevarer

We provide at least three local meals a day that showcase regional cuisine from meals homemade by our friends to the favourite restaurant down the street, as well as all the potable drinking water you can drink. You are responsible for any other snacks and drinks. We do our best to provide for all dietary needs.

    Om projektet

We go backpacking with a purpose! Our programs combine cross-cultural dialogue, critical learning, community service, and of course, travel and adventure!

    Mød din vært

Is voluntourism helping or hurting what people called ‘the developing world’? Is there a way for visitors to positively contribute to local initiatives while also thinking critically about international development? What’s the best ice cream flavour, really?

In 2006, we boarded a flight to Accra, Ghana seeking answers to these questions and so many more. When we touched down, we were hit with a barrage of sights, sounds, and smells that shattered our preconceived notions of the ‘global south’. Rather than stumbling into a crumbling landscape, we were greeted by a beautiful, bustling city, rich with culture and brimming with innovation.

At the same time, we could see some of the challenges local communities were grappling with. Why does poverty continue to plague so much of the world while billionaires multiply and millions pour into international development projects that don’t seem to make a difference? We heard that governments, charities, and international organizations often pushed their own agendas without consulting the communities they said they were ‘helping.’

We learned that projects were much more likely to succeed if they were carried out in collaboration with the community. Not as a handout, not as charity – but in solidarity.

We started talking to local NGOs and community leaders about what their real needs were. We cultivated relationships with grassroots organizations, community leaders, and local governments. We began to build a program that wouldn’t just plop a volunteer into a project they knew little about. Instead, we would take a learning-first approach. We would combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers could explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions.

Since that first pilot program in West Africa, OG has run hundreds of programs in more than 20 countries around the world. With all of this experience, we have expertly designed programs that navigate the inherent risks that come with embarking on such an awesome adventure. We bring cool, caring people together who want to explore the world while actively learning to change it for the better. We’re sparking a movement of globally active and socially conscious travellers.

Accessible, responsible and immersive travel is our mission. Go to our website to learn about our financial support options including our Financial Needs Grants that can cover up to 25% of your program fee.

    2018 at Cities & Sanctuaries

Operation Groundswell was the most incredible experience! I'd travelled to quite a few countries before this trip, but they completely changed the way I view the world. I've always felt skeptical about the idea of voluntourism and how random volunteer projects abroad affect people in local contexts. ..

    2014 at Cities & Sanctuaries

For years, I had wanted to travel to Cambodia and OG did not disappoint in any way! The program was perfectly balanced between rural, cut-off-from-everything projects and big city experiences. As soon as you started missing having running water or electricity, you headed to the big city! And as soon ...

    2014 at Cities & Sanctuaries

One of my biggest fears of backpacking was going on a trip and coming back with the same or similar stories as the thousands of tourists that travel to SEA each year. Its not hard to do, see some beaches, party on Khao san rd, get to a full moon party and see Angkor wat. However this trip gave me ...
I will remember this trip for the rest of my life. My partner and I planned to go 2 years ago, we actually won an Instagram contest haha but it was cancelled due to COVID. 2019 at Seed to Shelf

As a fairly experienced traveller before my program with OG, I was worried that I wouldn't get a lot out of the program. I was worried I'd resent the group dynamic, that I wouldn't learn much, and that the promises of real and intimate connections with locals simply couldn't be achieved in this ...
