About the project

The NGO  is a non profit organisation that provides assistance programs to families and their children particularly in the area of nutrition.

What they do:

  • They are based in one of the poorest areas

  • 12 children aged 3 months to 4 years old.

  • The owner takes temporary jobs to earn money to run the daycare

  • They provide a nursery/daycare for low income families and their children in the surrounding area

  • They provide extra support for families who are in need and provide counselling, assistance and food packages

  • They provide information and awareness for families who cannot get assistance from social welfare or hospitals

  • They provide food packages, nutritional support and home visits to children who have been referred to their services.

  • They also aim to provide more intensive support in the form of home based physiotherapy to children with Cerebral Palsy who are currently receiving their support and others in the future. They also aim to provide this training to family members to continue the physical therapy

  • They run a daycare for families in the surrounding areas which is free of charge to children under 3 years old. The daycare allows families to work and/or relieve pressure during the day while their children are kept safe in a nurturing environment.

  • They conduct home visits for children with more complex needs and disabilities. During these visits weights and some measurements are taken and an update is taken on the child’s condition. Food packages can be left for the child and their family if there are donations.

  • They also receive referrals from hospitals or community workers for children who need the services they offer. These referrals often come when children have been discharged from hospital after being treated for acute malnutrition.

The Problem
There are widespread socioeconomic issues in Tanzania, many children end up not receiving the best start. Although in most circumstances communities and families come together to support each other, many children may not receive social welfare care that supports them in crisis.

  • Families not being able to afford to provide food security for their children leading to malnutrition and hospitalisation
  • Families needing to work and unable to pay for day care or nursery which can lead to issues of neglect or unstable income
  • Children with learning difficulties and their families not receiving proper help
  • Children are not given enough stimulation, assistance and nutrition to reach developmental milestones
The Mission

This NGO is already at work helping to combat these issues. They are welcome volunteers who may help in areas of

  • Childcare
  • Nutrition support
  • Home visits to support children with acute malnutrition and their families
  • Administration: helping to organise their resources, create awareness and organise data & information for the NGO
  • Physiotherapy for children with Cerebral Palsy
Your role as a volunteer
Your role as a volunteer will be to assist the staff meet the children's development and social needs. The children require a lot of support and stimulation to learn throw play and social interaction. The centre mainly requires general day to day and people who are enthusiastic, patient and passionate about child development.

General childcare: Supporting the care of the children day to day.

  • Overseeing the children during class time and play activities
  • Assisting the staff with children who need more learning support or attention during the day
  • Helping with the upkeep of the centre-cleaning, cooking and maintenance every day
  • Tending to the children during play time
Community Health Support and Outreach: Home visits for severely malnourished and disabled children

Project Management: The centres require a lot of management support ensuring that it stays open. You can help by overseeing the weekly budget, fundraising, ensuring the centres are providing adequate meals, that the property is kept safe and clean, even photography or helping build their websites.

Training and supporting the staff: As well delivering small scale teaching and training to the local staff on first aid and general skills support.

  • Children's Nutrition
  • Children's Health Education
  • Help to innovate and develop their current curriculum for pre schoolers
  • Help to update and refresh basic child development and child counselling skills

Assistants, students and interns are vital to help deliver the care the children required as the centre is also understaffed.

Why this is important
Many of the children have special needs, disabilities and require extra support, additional psychological care and special education.
These are exceptionally bright and engaged children who have the support of passionate and hardworking staff fighting for their futures. But there is so much more to be done. Many of the centres are in need of full refurbishment and stimulating and educational toys and equipment is needed to progress these children.
Much deserved funds are desperately needed to help the centres progress and reach their full potential. Educational toys, books, classroom materials and food donations are also what volunteers have contributed which have made a huge, long term difference to the children.

But will you make a difference?
Yes. Many bright and motivated volunteers have shone the light and shown the difference that can be made through volunteering. By providing time and care, volunteers introduce new ideas, hope and healthcare at ground level, adding to the work already being done.
