    About the program

This Bali based non-profit organization focuses on restoring damaged coral reef across Bali and Indonesia. Bali's reefs belong to the Coral Triangle and are home to different kind of coral species. However, due to massive human influence, coral reefs keep on dying and only 35% of Indonesia's coral reefs are in good health - with the number in decline. Most of the reefs in North Bali have died due to the constructive fishing methods of the local fishermen over the past decades. The village of Pemuteran took action and forced a change. Not only does the reef restoration program encourage the growth of the reef, also the local community is very active in promoting sustainable fishing practices and prohibits destructive fishing practices. Pemuteran is now a leading village for sustainable tourism in Bali.

Volunteers will be a part of local diver team whose responsibilities is to monitor and keep the coral reefs grow healthily. If you are not certified SCUBA DIVER, then you may take OPEN WATER SCUBA course on the first week of your program. After mastering SCUBA DIVING skill, you will be part of its coral restoration team, the front-liners of the grass-root community based coral restoration effort. You don't need to bring any equipment, as it will be provided by the dive center.

Volunteers will spend most of the work time both under water and in the local community, with minor task of reporting/computer work. You will be expected to work in restoration center in the morning and in the local community in the afternoon, or it could be reversed depends on the appointment and weather and sea condition. There is the possibility that you are not allowed to dive on some days due to the weather or water conditions. Your safety is the main concern!

You don't necessarily need to study Marine Conservation or Biology, but you should have a general interest in marine conservation and should be proactive. There is a lot to do for those who are able to open their eyes!

Although the village is well developed, it is still a very laid back vibe. There are no parties or much entertainment in the evening. If you are a nature lover, an ocean defender and enjoy time off from hectic lifestyle, this is the right place to be for you.

    Social culture visa information

To work as a volunteer in Indonesia, you will need a social culture visa. This visa is issued to applicants who are going to Indonesia for a social/cultural visit, for example, visiting relatives or friends who live in Indonesia; visiting social organizations with the same type of activities; for exchange visits between educational institutions, carrying out research, and attending training program in Indonesia. Social-culture visa holders are not allowed to receive any salary from the visit they do. You have to apply before your arrival in Bali at the Indonesian embassy in your home country, to be able to volunteer or do an internship legally; you do need the Social-Culture Visa. Any other visa type is not sufficient.

Time of application: 2-3 weeks. The visa application process takes some time and due to other reasons (Indonesian holidays or strike of post employees for example) the process can be delayed. Therefore, we recommend starting the application process the latest around 4 weeks prior your arrival in Indonesia.
    • Validity: 60 days after arrival
    • Extension: can be extended up to 4 times every 30 days
    • Costs: 45 Euro
Cost of extension in Bali: starting from 800.000-1.050.000 IDR via private agency, 750.000 IDR non-agency assistance extension
This guideline helps you through the visa application. However, we highly suggest you to re-check the information and visit the Indonesian Embassy’s website of your capital or call them directly.

    Average Living expenses in Bali

Indonesia is considered to be really cheap to live in. This is something you will find out quickly after your arrival in Bali. Here you will see with which additional costs you have to plan during your time in Bali.

    • Food: The amount of money you will spend on food depends on your eating habits. If you eat at a local warung you will spend around 2€/2.20US$ for a proper meal with drink. But if you prefer to eat western food you will spend a lot more (at least 5€/5.35US$ but probably even more).
    • Laundry: In our accommodation you won’t have laundry facilities. So you have to bring your laundry to a laundry service somewhere around your living area. Average laundry costs are around 0.50-1€/$ for one kilogram of laundry.
    • Phone Credit: In all our accommodations you will find wifi. Therefore 2GB mobile data plus some credit for calling your friends should be enough per month. This will cost you around 5€/5.25$.
    • Scooter Rental + Petrol: Renting a scooter will cost around 42€/45$ per month. Petrol is quite cheap in Indonesia and 1 litre will be around  0.50€/$. In practice this means, that you won't need more than 4 €/$ per week for petrol unless you intend to to a bike trip around the island.
    • Trips: How much money you want to spend for trips to explore Bali is eventually up to you. You can minimize expenses if you spend a bit more time organizing as much as you can by yourself instead of using a travel agent or trip packages.

    Surfing in Bali

Bali is a world mekka for surf adventures. Beginners, advanced and professionals will find what they are looking for for an ultimate surf experience. Many surf guides and surf schools have established in the southern part of Bali and provide various offers to learn surfing or improve your skills.

    Diving

Besides surfing, scuba diving is among the top 5 activities in Bali. A breath-taking underwater world with intact reefs and unique animals awaits you. Many dive centers offer courses for non-divers or snorkelers as well. They usually suggest different itineraries for everyone's needs. Let yourself be enchanted by Bali's underwater world.

    Snorkeling

If you don't have a PADI license, you can simply go snorkeling at reefs close to Bali's shore. You may find manta rays, colorful and intact coral reefs or even small ship wrecks. Usually, you only need to pay 1 or 2 Euros to rent snorkeling equipment and off you go.

    Rafting

Rafting is also a very popular water sport activity, where you can explore Bali's stunning landscapes on rivers. Many rafting companies offer different tours for beginners as well as for advanced.

    Hiking Mount Agung & Batur

Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur are both active volcanoes in Bali. Local guides offer you hikes, where you start your hike early morning or even at night to arrive in time at the top of the mountain to enjoy the most breath-taking sunrise you have ever seen.

    Über die Organisation

Bali Internships provides volunteer programs that encourage intercultural learning between local communities in Bali and both national and international visitors.

    Lerne deine Organisation kennen

As a local placement agency in Bali, we are specialized in providing quality individual internships in Bali and volunteer work placement services in Bali.

    How it all started

We started back in 2010 have we established and sustained a vast network of trust, support and friendship among non-profit organizations, educational institutions, companies and international volunteers and interns.

We successfully built trustful and reliable connections of existing non-profit organizations and schools all around Bali that are legally acknowledged. Each and every program has been existing and running for years to work in favor of local communities and to preserve Bali’s natural beauty.

    Our core strength

We identify where the support among our host programs is needed and where your motivation, skills and background as a volunteer could favor the community development.

    Our motivation

We are motivated by our belief that international volunteers will make an extraordinary experience abroad. Working on an island, that is actually economically growing and dependent from increasing tourism, but controversially also suffering from it, will have a learning effect on the social-cultural understanding of each volunteer. It is our mission to raise awareness that giving back to Bali's people and nature is gratefully respected by local communities, who offer an outstanding hospitality and cultural experience in return.
