You might have heard that the “land of a thousand smiles” is all about 30 cent street pad thai and bucket-fuelled dance parties. Sure enough, all of this exists, but we’re here to prove to you that there is so much more to Southeast Asia. We’ll backpack our way through Thailand and Cambodia examining animal conservation and environmental justice, meeting local change makers, and getting off the beaten path.

Our volunteer programs take a learning-first approach. We combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers can explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions. Here are some of the community partners we will be work with on this program:

Sokha Farm is owned and operated by Sokha Youn and his family. Here, both local and international visitors come together to learn about sustainable agriculture practices near the ancient temple complex in Banteay Chhmar, northwestern Cambodia. Sokha Farm aims to help Cambodians in implementing healthy, eco-friendly agricultural techniques on their farms, which will allow them to more strongly support themselves while also protecting the wellbeing of their communities.

The Elephant Valley Project (EVP) is Cambodia’s Premier elephant sanctuary. They have been rescuing and retiring working captive elephants since 2006, and aim to improve the health and welfare of the captive elephants in Mondulkiri Province, work to conserve the wild elephants natural habitat and to support the local people who work with these magnificent creatures. They also aim to protect the local forest and natural resources, the habitat of the elephants.

Day 1 - 4: Orientation in the Big Mango
Our group will be introduced to Thailand's bustling capital of Bangkok. In a citywide scavenger hunt we'll be introduced to the sights, sounds, and tastes of this modern yet distinctively Thai city. We'll visit some of the city's most beautiful temples and get a feel for the intricacies of this diverse and colourful metropolis.

While Bangkok is one of the world's most visited cities, we'll escape from the crowds as we jet out on a bike tour. We'll quickly head off to Bang Krachao, also known as the city's "Green Lung:, due to its lush, forested landscape. While urbanization is rapidly affecting the area, there is some hope that ecotourism may be a tool for preserving this oasis. We will dig into the possibilities and challenges of this kind of tourism development - all while mounted on bikes and being guided by a local friend who has grown up in the area.

Day 5 - 11: Sustainable agriculture with Ockenden Cambodia
We will head straight to the border into Cambodia! We will meet our good friends at Ockenden Cambodia. Comprised of a group of amazing and dedicated activists, Ockenden is committed to promoting a teaching sustainable, innovative, and disaster-resilient farming practices in marginalized communities around the country. We will join them on one of their many ongoing long-term projects while getting an intimate glimpse of the realities, challenges, and promises of rural development in Cambodia.

A staple of most projects with Ockenden is tree planting, which we do alongside primary and secondary school students. Deforestation and global warming are two of the biggest issues that will affect the country for generations to come, and planting trees is one of the most beneficial things we can do as guests in the country (while also educating the youth on the importance of doing so!) Other activities in the past have included digging ponds, installing floating gardens, and building trellises and bale gardens.

Day 12 - 14: Bat caves and circus acts in Battambang
We'll head to the charming town of Battambang where we'll relax and get cleaned up at a funky hostel. Battambang is famous for its nearby caves, where, in the evenings we will witness millions of bats gliding through the sky!

We'll also be visiting a unique social outreach program that engages at-risk youth in the area by channeling their energies into acrobatics and circus arts. It will be unlike anything you've seen before!

Day 14 - 16: Dark histories and bright futures in Phnom Penh
Our team will be keep heading south as we move on to Cambodia's capital. Integral to any journey to Cambodia, we'll visit the S-21 prison museum and the infamous Killing Fields in order to understand Cambodia's tragic recent history and contextualize its present challenges and opportunities.

But Phnom Penh is also so much more than just this dark past. We will also make sure to familiarize ourselves with the hip, modern, funky vibe that energizes this booming city!

Day 17 - 19: Turtle love in Kratie
After a scenic bus ride into the east of the country, we will get situated in the small town of Kratie, famous for its population of endangered river dolphins. We'll spend an afternoon cruising along the Mekong and viewing these elusive creatures in their natural environment.

Most importantly, we will be spending a day with the Mekong Turtle Conservation Center (MTCC) with whom OG organizes an annual baby turtle release. Considering themselves as custodians of the endangered Cantor softshell turtle population, the MTC goes to great lengths to "give turtles a head start". We will see how community, awareness, and conservation all work together to preserve an endangered species!

    Day 20 - 26: Volunteering for elephants
The gentle giants at EVP will quickly capture our hearts as we spend days hiking through sanctuary and getting to know each of their individual stories. No, we will not be riding them. And no, we will not be feeding them. We will observe them, learn about them, and contribute to their well-being by volunteering around the sanctuary! These are senior elephants - coming largely from histories of being overworked - who may now roam as close within their natural environment as possible.

    Day 27 - 36: Independent Travel Time
A staple of all Operation Groundswell programs. You can travel independently if you desire, but we encourage everyone to travel in pairs or small groups. This is the ideal time to learn more about your specific interests, volunteering, travelling, or just relaxing. Southeast Asia is bursting with gems!

    Day 37 - 40: Disorientation in Bangkok
Our group will reconvene for a program debrief known as ‘disorientation’ prior to flying home. We’ll learn that it is possible to take it easy in this restless city, and re-live memories of the program, recap the lessons that we’ve learned, discuss how to stay connected, and collaborate on projects in the future.

    Unterkunft

Traveling as much as we do on the Southeast Asia program, there are a number of different styles of accommodation. In cities, we stay at clean, safe, and secure guesthouses. When we’re out in rural communities, local families will host us in their homes and we might just sleep under the stars for a few nights (with mosquito nets of course)! Being welcomed by local families is an incredible way for the team to integrate within the communities we visit. Cold bucket showers are common and continuous electricity can’t always be guaranteed – so come prepared! Though Western comforts should not be assumed, you can expect to better connect with locals and their culture.

    Verpflegung

We provide at least three local meals a day that showcase regional cuisine from meals homemade by our friends to the favourite restaurant down the street, as well as all the potable drinking water you can drink. You are responsible for any other snacks and drinks. We do our best to provide for all dietary needs.

    Über die Organisation

We go backpacking with a purpose! Our programs combine cross-cultural dialogue, critical learning, community service, and of course, travel and adventure!

    Lerne deine Organisation kennen

Is voluntourism helping or hurting what people called ‘the developing world’? Is there a way for visitors to positively contribute to local initiatives while also thinking critically about international development? What’s the best ice cream flavour, really?

In 2006, we boarded a flight to Accra, Ghana seeking answers to these questions and so many more. When we touched down, we were hit with a barrage of sights, sounds, and smells that shattered our preconceived notions of the ‘global south’. Rather than stumbling into a crumbling landscape, we were greeted by a beautiful, bustling city, rich with culture and brimming with innovation.

At the same time, we could see some of the challenges local communities were grappling with. Why does poverty continue to plague so much of the world while billionaires multiply and millions pour into international development projects that don’t seem to make a difference? We heard that governments, charities, and international organizations often pushed their own agendas without consulting the communities they said they were ‘helping.’

We learned that projects were much more likely to succeed if they were carried out in collaboration with the community. Not as a handout, not as charity – but in solidarity.

We started talking to local NGOs and community leaders about what their real needs were. We cultivated relationships with grassroots organizations, community leaders, and local governments. We began to build a program that wouldn’t just plop a volunteer into a project they knew little about. Instead, we would take a learning-first approach. We would combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers could explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions.

Since that first pilot program in West Africa, OG has run hundreds of programs in more than 20 countries around the world. With all of this experience, we have expertly designed programs that navigate the inherent risks that come with embarking on such an awesome adventure. We bring cool, caring people together who want to explore the world while actively learning to change it for the better. We’re sparking a movement of globally active and socially conscious travellers.

Accessible, responsible and immersive travel is our mission. Go to our website to learn about our financial support options including our Financial Needs Grants that can cover up to 25% of your program fee.
