    Over het programma

Whether you are traveling alone or want to organize a medical mission trip for a group of students or professionals, OGVO makes organizing a medical mission simple and affordable in Ghana. This gives you the opportunity to travel abroad and work alongside local medical professionals, engaging in mutually-beneficial learning exchanges while providing valuable support to hospitals and clinics within the local communities. You can leave home feeling confident that you’ll be well supported in your new home away from home. Plus, you’ll be in the company of like-minded international medical students and professionals who share your passion for developing your skills and global medical perspective.

On a medical mission trip with OGVO, you will have the opportunity to provide medical care and healthcare education to communities where healthcare is limited or difficult to obtain. By shadowing local doctors and nurses and working under instruction, you play an important role in providing essential care within under-resourced hospitals or clinics.

Medical mission trips with OGVO provide short-term medical volunteer opportunities abroad for medical professionals, nurses, dentists, college students and pre-med students. Medical missions are available year-round in Ghana, Africa.

OGVO has over 13 years of experience in organizing medical mission’s trips for students, pre-med students and medical professionals, as well as medical mission trips for nurses in Ghana.

On a medical mission in Ghana, nursing and medical students can expect to support a range of tasks, working across a variety of healthcare settings. This can include providing basic patient care, taking vitals, dressing wounds, triage nursing, and helping to prepare medical equipment. There are also opportunities to observe local doctors and nurses in operating rooms, as well as shadow their daily routines.

Examples of medical volunteer opportunities with OGVO in Ghana include: Adolescent Counseling, Community Health Education, Dentistry, General surgery, Laboratory, Nursing, Maternity & Midwifery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Pharmacology, Physical Therapy, Physiotherapy, Prenatal, Psychology, Radiology, and many more!

Please note, all volunteers are supervised by local staff and under instruction from qualified doctors during a medical mission trip, so regardless of your level of qualification or experience, you can feel confident that you will be well supported to make a valuable contribution on your mission trip.

Can I use this program as part of a college or university placement?

It is certainly possible to use one of OGVO’s programs as part of your university or college placement. Project staff can sign off any paperwork required by your course tutors. OGVO regularly receives medical, childcare, psychology and nursing placement students at our projects across Ghana and we have ties with some of the leading universities.

If you’re a course tutor and would like further information about how one of OGVO’s programs could meet the placement requirements for your degree course then please contact us directly.

Volunteers get the weekends off to go on trips and explore Ghana excluded in the cost; Ghana has so much to offer volunteers with its rich culture, festivals, food, art & craft centers, castles & forts, long sandy beaches, national parks, waterfalls, rain forest and other interesting places to visit. Volunteers who come to Ghana experience these even more fully by getting an insider's understanding of the country.

Every weekend we organize trips for our volunteers to travel throughout Ghana to experience the Ghanaian cultural and explore. We have a lot of projects all over Ghana so you can choose to volunteer in the second largest city, Kumasi or in the Ghanaian country side.

Our program is an excellent opportunity to combine adventurous foreign travel with a worthwhile job as a volunteer. You will improve your transferable skills such as team-working, presentation and communication. Above all, this is an unrivaled opportunity to gain an insight into a completely different culture and way of life.

Our projects are not all about work, volunteers get opportunities to explore this beautiful part of West Africa. Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, Kakum National Park and Nzulezo Stilt Village are all within few hours from the community you will be staying in, Ghana offers an array of varying cultures and landscapes including national parks and stunning rain-forests.

    Accomodatie

Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local host family, and will gain the opportunity to become immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Ghanaian families are renowned for their kindness and hospitality and they love to learn about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!

All families have been fully vetted by our team and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Bedrooms are private but generally shared with volunteers of the same gender. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom. Generally, your host brother, sister or mother assist you with your laundry but it is not an obligation, learn to wash your clothing’s with your hands in several buckets, enjoy the sun drying your clothes and odor the African fragrance in your clothes.

It is important to remember that the living conditions in Ghana are different from home. Most families have running water, but hot water is still uncommon in some areas. Although the accommodation is basic, this is part of the challenge and experience of volunteering in a developing country. With a little patience, and a flexible attitude, you will quickly get used to your new surroundings.

    Eten & Drank

Host families will provide volunteers with breakfast, lunch and dinner during the working week.

Breakfast is usually ready by around 7am; however you can eat later if you prefer to get up late. Lunch is usually packed by your host family in a lunch box so that you can eat at your project if you wish. Dinner is usually served around 6pm.

If you have special eating needs, you can indicate that while applying. Even though special eating needs are not something we can guarantee, we will do our best to meet your needs.
