    À propos du programme

This project focuses on the implementation of a village Tree school program for 3-5 year old children and adult literacy for both refugees and host community in six villages that make up Buyiga Island. The program will be conducted under tree due to lack of classrooms in the village, to advance play, numeracy and literacy as part of school readiness skills for children, and advance functional adult literacy for anyone over the age of fifteen, who had missed the opportunity of formal education during childhood. A large range of people are targeted, including children, youth, men, women, and older people. The program is based on many years of research by American and other researchers which found that young Ugandan children who are not “school ready” by the time they start preschool (school readiness consists of a composite group of skills and abilities these children should be able to perform by age 3) are more likely not to complete primary or secondary school. The proposed program – which is ideally suited to be implemented through these village Tree - shall increase school readiness skills within 3-5 age group, linking literacy to people’s livelihoods and needs. Additionally, the program will provide employment and training for local young women, who would act as facilitators and village coordinators, and potentially reach thousands of young children and adults.

We shall start with One Village Kamusogonya as a pilot for the first six months before enrolling to the other five villages to prevent children from walking long distance. Our class sessions shall start from 9.00am to 12.00 afternoon for children and 3.00pm to 5.00pm for adults shall study for effectively for three hours per day and set up play material center for children made by the children, parents and their teachers using local materials. Each group in the village shall be called Lit club for both children and adults and each shall consist 15 children and 30 for adults.

In your free time there is many options for activities! A lot of our volunteers like to take extended weekends to do safari, gorilla trekking or adventure water sports. All of these are at the volunteers own cost, but are organized through our local partners to ensure the best price and experience. Our close proximity to Kampala means there is plenty of opportunity to explore the craft markets, eat local food and go to local events including soccer games. We encourage volunteers to travel on their weekends and will help arrange trips or activities.

SAF is a Company limited by guarantee and NGO under NGO Act 2016 in Uganda, operating in peri-urban (underprivileged slum areas) and in hard-to-reach rural communities of Uganda, with a special focus on availing life opportunities to the underprivileged and marginalized in society.
Our partnership model is an effective approach that leverages the strengths of each partner, while maintaining collaboration and transparency. Through a grassroots approach, our development programs are implemented in consultation with the local/beneficiary community to identify the needs they want to address, utilizing their existing resources, knowledge, skills and materials. We seek to build local capacity by empowering beneficiaries to become responsible for their own development so as to ensure sustainable impact from our interventions.

Our Vision: Saint Ann Foundation (SAF) envisions a world where children are nurtured, loved, and given the necessary support they need to live life to their full potential, rescuing them from extreme poverty and deprivation, and where girls and women have the opportunity to actively contribute to their communities.

Our Mission: We exist to promote a coordinated effort aimed at the efficient acquisition and utilization of resources in order to enhance the welfare of children, girls, and women.
