    About the program

People with special needs in the Dominican Republic face many challenges that are not often seen: poverty, lack of accessible education and medical care, lack of opportunities, among many others. That is why one of our main objectives in this project is to empower the skills of children, youth and adults with special needs, in order to provide them with the necessary tools to achieve a better quality of life.

The other main objective of this project is also to create safe spaces for these people, where they can feel comfortable and happy.

This volunteer experience will allow you to create a lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of people with these needs in the Dominican Republic, while giving you exposure to a different reality, which will broaden your perspective.

These direct beneficiaries of the socio-educational inclusion project in the Dominican Republic are children, youth and older adults between the ages of 5 and 40, who have specific profiles such as Down syndrome, ADHD, fetal alcohol syndrome, emotional problems, infantile cerebral palsy, mental illness, physical disabilities, autism, speech and language development disorders, among others.

    Typical day

As a volunteer, you will be performing tasks that effectively make the special care provided in educational centers for these special needs individuals more accessible to the most vulnerable, as this care tends to be restrictively expensive in the Dominican Republic.

Your tasks are organized in two schedules:

    • The morning schedule goes from 9:00 to 12:00; in these shifts you will be helping students 18 years of age or older.
    • Some of the tasks you may perform during this shift are:

Provide pre-employment and occupational training that will provide your students with useful skills that will significantly help them in the process of immersion in your community.

    • Help students learn to identify emotions within themselves and others.
    • Teach students some of the key social skills needed on a daily basis.
    • To help young people achieve personal independence.

Afternoon hours are from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm; during these shifts you will assist students under the age of 18.

Some of the tasks you may perform during this shift are:

    • Teach and create activities in subjects such as mathematical logical thinking, literacy and art.
    • Develop multisensory stimulation and computation.

    Free-time activities

A warm, tropical paradise located in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic has countless beautiful locations available for you to discover.

Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's capital, is an excellent spot to visit; there are a lot of historic monuments, museums, a bustling nightlife, and art galleries through which you can experience the Dominican Republic's unique culture.

In your visit to Santo Domingo, you cannot miss places like the Alcazar Colón fort, where you can get scenic views of the Ozama river; the Ciudad Colonial, a bustling area filled with colonial buildings with shops and parks; the beautiful Catedral Primada de América; and the many other sights, restaurants, museums, and interesting places at the Dominican Republic's capital.

The area of Samaná is famous for its really large amount of coconut trees. There are a lot of beautiful white-sanded beaches, such as Cayo Levantado or Cayo de Arena, that you can visit during your stay in the Dominican Republic. Samaná is also known for being a whale sanctuary, so on many times of year you shall be able to spot many of these very impressive animals.

On the north coast of the Samaná region, there is a little charming city called Las Terrenas, a small city surrounded by the beautiful beaches of Playa Bonita and Playa Coson that is the perfect spot for kite surfing.
We would also recommend volunteers to go visit the Salto el Limón, a beautiful more than 50 meter high waterfall located at around 20 km from Samaná. In order to get to the falls, you can book a local guide (it usually costs between 100 and 500 pesos per person, although it's negotiable), that will lead you through the rainforest either walking or riding a horse. It's an overall very memorable and scenic experience you shouldn't miss!

There's also the national park Los Haitises, scattered with mangroves, creeks, humid subtropical forests, seagrass meadows, pirate hideouts and pristine cays, a perfect spot for bird-watching.

    Meet your organization

ADVENTURE VOLUNTEER is a non-profit organization, established in 2017. We collaborate in the social and environmental field through projects of conservation and protection of the environment and animals, as well as in the social part through projects of empowerment of women, community development, functional diversity, medical or teaching.

Our team of collaborators has a deep experience in international volunteer programs.  We know all the realities of the areas where we are working, collaborating and where we have a presence.

Our projects offer volunteers the opportunity to meet, share and participate in social and environmental projects. These projects demand educational and recreational activities that benefit communities of different cultures and customs, communities with economic difficulties and different degrees of social exclusion.

Milo and his family are beyond amazing! It was an experience that I absolutely loved. The only thing I did not like is that you could walk nearly an hour into town OR take a $10 taxi every time you wanted to go into town. There were days where we went into town twice! If we were to pay for a taxi ...
