About the program

Local children in Uganda, particularly those in disadvantaged areas, rarely have the opportunity to meet and interact with foreigners. Despite the fact that English is one of Uganda's official languages, most students do not have the opportunity to practice it outside of the classroom. Interacting with them and properly speaking the language with them may also benefit their learning and boost their confidence in the language.

You will be assigned to a local school in the Kajjansi district. Your specific placement will be determined by the needs and availability of the community at the time. During the holidays, a "day-camp" style English and Sports program will be set up and run by participants with the assistance of our coordinators.

Remember that you will be in charge of preparing lessons for the class, as well as assisting the local teacher and leading classes on your own (based on your experience). We both follow the school's curriculum in a formal setting, but at some teaching placements, the lessons can be done in an informal setting, so you are free to be creative! Games, gardening, and singing are popular activities among the youngest students.

Do not be concerned about your lack of special qualifications. The entire purpose of this program is to provide any assistance possible, whether it is simply allowing children to hear English pronunciation by native English speakers or providing additional assistance with other academic subjects. Please keep in mind that anything you can provide is greatly appreciated, and we are grateful. The main goal is that, in addition to the extra learning and cross-cultural exchanges, you have touched the lives of the children, which will undoubtedly leave a special place in their hearts.

On the other hand, the core focus of our Teaching program will be determined by the needs of the Child Development Centers or schools at the time. Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist children with basic hygiene and sanitation routines such as nail cutting, hair combing, hand washing, tooth brushing, and so on.
  • Teaching English alongside local teachers.
  • Prepares and organizes meaningful learning activities and lessons.
  • Facilitates children's songs, dances, and storytelling activities.
  • Facilitate learning activities such as playing fun games, coloring, and other related activities.
  • Participate in other activities offered at the center or school.
  • Prepare evaluation exercises.
  • Mark the monthly exams or assessments.

Free-time activities

Known as the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is one of the most scenic and interesting countries you may get the chance to visit as a volunteer: breathtaking scenery, a very rich and interesting culture, plenty of wildlife and flora, delicious cuisine, everything you might want, Uganda probably has it -and more.

Some of the places we would recommend you to visit as a volunteer are:
  • Kampala: Uganda's mountainous capital. In Kampala you can find bustling markets, historical sights (especially the Kasubi royal tombs, a Unesco heritage site tied to the Buganda kingdom), museums (especially the national museum), cultural areas (don't miss shows shown at the Ndere center!), and also a very diverse nightlife.
  • Murchinson Falls National Park: Sprawling from the shore of Lake Albert, it's the largest park in Uganda and a place you shouldn't miss: it's a place filled with large African fauna, beautiful scenery, large and strong waterfalls, and excellent safari opportunities.
  • Rwenzori Mountain Ranges: a Unesco heritage site, it's one of Africa's most beautiful alpine areas. It's filled with glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, and flora and fauna you can't find in many other places.
  • Fort Portal: It's been named one of Uganda's "touristic cities"; it's the city you will be staying at and one that has much to see and do: there's the Tooro Botanical Gardens, nearby scenic spots like lake Kyaninga, or historical monuments and places like the new Tooro Kingdom Palace or the Old Tooro Kingdom Palace.

Meet your organization

ADVENTURE VOLUNTEER is a non-profit organization, established in 2017. We collaborate in the social and environmental field through projects of conservation and protection of the environment and animals, as well as in the social part through projects of empowerment of women, community development, functional diversity, medical or teaching.

Our team of collaborators has a deep experience in international volunteer programs.  We know all the realities of the areas where we are working, collaborating and where we have a presence.

Our projects offer volunteers the opportunity to meet, share and participate in social and environmental projects. These projects demand educational and recreational activities that benefit communities of different cultures and customs, communities with economic difficulties and different degrees of social exclusion.

Milo and his family are beyond amazing! It was an experience that I absolutely loved. The only thing I did not like is that you could walk nearly an hour into town OR take a $10 taxi every time you wanted to go into town. There were days where we went into town twice! If we were to pay for a taxi ...
