About the program

Unfortunately good health care is not available for everyone in Tanzania. Insurance is not as common as in the Western world and the service of hospitals differs dramatically.

The Project:

Tumaini Health Centre is a hospital and health centre owned and run by the Sisters Of Our Lady Kilimanjaro and the congregation of the church. Furthermore, this hospital not only reaches but  exceeds the medical standards required by the government of Tanzania to be a fully functioning hospital in Arusha. Their services are as follows

  • Diagnosis
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Inpatient and outpatient treatments programs
  • Fully operational pre- and postnatal unit
  • Perform surgery
  • Provide triage for accident and emergency to all local hospitals and clinics.
  • Laboratory tests for blood testing and ultrasound technology as well.
Your Work:
As a volunteer at Tumaini Health Centre, you will be required to help out in the everyday jobs as a member of the hospital team. Depending on your level of training as a nurse or doctor, you will be supervised and assisted in all your duties. Nothing will be asked of you that you are not comfortable with, but you can expand your skill set and knowledge of medical care in all aspects of hospital responsibilities. When you start, you will discuss with Sister Dr. Clarissa, who is in charge of the hospital, where you want to be placed, and she will plan your work accordingly. You will be required to work from 8am until 4pm (or end of shift hours if you are in surgery), so times can vary depending on your department. If your shift will end at night time, transport will be provided to make sure you are safe. The hospital is open seven days a week, but you only have to work Monday to Friday if not otherwise discussed.

Typical day

A typical day starts at 8am when you arrive at the hospital and discuss your daily tasks with your co-workers.
Depending on the amount of patients, you will work in the different units the health centre has. Whether that may be assisting a woman giving birth, treating smaller wounds or handing out ...

About the project

Viva Tanzania is a German-Tanzanian organization established in order to support meaningful and needy projects in Arusha, North Tanzania.

Meet your organization

Viva Tanzania was established in 2015 by Tizia Doriye due to her passion for intercultural encounters, tourism and nature. Tizia is a Cultural Anthropologist by profession. Together with our local team we want to make sure that you can make experiences abroad in a safe environment.

We want to assist people from all over the world and Tanzanians to learn from one another through intercultural exchange. By helping foreigners to find meaningful projects that need support we do not only want to enable them to gain experience in working and being with people from different origins but also broaden the horizonts of everyone. Our mission is to establish an environment in which intercultural encounter can take place. Our participants will be enabled to gain first hand experience in a totally different sourrounding from what they are knowing. We want to show them the diversity of people, cultures and lifestyles. On the other hand we want to support needy projects in Arusha, our hometown.

Our vision is to change the people's perception of Africa, Tanzania and its inhabitants through challenging and reducing stereotypes and racism. We believe that this can only be done through intercultural exchange like volunteering.

Tizia is the of Viva Tanzania. She has a Bachelor in Cultural Anthropology and she wrote her Bachelor thesis about Maasai stereotypes in media and tourism. She loves her three kids and three dogs as well as the life in Tanzania. She is responsible for the website, the marketing and the communication before, while and after your stay. She already spent a year as a volunteer in Tanzania and did an internship in Arusha. She is also a yoga teacher and a massage therapist. So she definitely knows what’s important to make your time unforgettable. At the same time she is your contact person for all intercultural issues and problems.
