About the program

This women's group was founded in 2017 to empower widows and people diagnosed with and HIV/Aids to improve their lives. Becoming a widow is always hard, but to become a widow after a husband dies due to HIV/AIDS creates a very difficult life in Tanzania. The women and their families lose their stable income, which in Tanzania is usually provided by men, as well as also worrying that they may lose their home since women move into their husbands house shortly after marriage and are not always accepted by the husbands family. Sometimes women can end up homeless and without any income. This is where this NGO steps in and helps the women to learn new skills to ensure a sustainable source of income. The project aims to mobilise, motivate and advocate for people in vulnerable situations in areas of health, social justice and economic empowerment.

Furthermore the NGO runs a day care, mainly for the children from the women who attend the business trainings and English courses.

The Project:

The NGO runs a variety of programs like training in sustainable horticulture, tailoring, baking, micro-financing and English courses. They need volunteers who have experience or an interest in the fields of marketing, business, health education, education for children, entrepreneurial skills, proposal writing and fundraising.

You do not need any previous knowledge but it's important that you are self-driven and open-minded to find new ways to help and improve the situation of the women. To help the continuing of the foundation's work, donations and fundraisers are always welcomed.

About the project

Viva Tanzania is a German-Tanzanian organization established in order to support meaningful and needy projects in Arusha, North Tanzania.

Meet your organization

Viva Tanzania was established in 2015 by Tizia Doriye due to her passion for intercultural encounters, tourism and nature. Tizia is a Cultural Anthropologist by profession. Together with our local team we want to make sure that you can make experiences abroad in a safe environment.

We want to assist people from all over the world and Tanzanians to learn from one another through intercultural exchange. By helping foreigners to find meaningful projects that need support we do not only want to enable them to gain experience in working and being with people from different origins but also broaden the horizonts of everyone. Our mission is to establish an environment in which intercultural encounter can take place. Our participants will be enabled to gain first hand experience in a totally different sourrounding from what they are knowing. We want to show them the diversity of people, cultures and lifestyles. On the other hand we want to support needy projects in Arusha, our hometown.

Our vision is to change the people's perception of Africa, Tanzania and its inhabitants through challenging and reducing stereotypes and racism. We believe that this can only be done through intercultural exchange like volunteering.

Tizia is the of Viva Tanzania. She has a Bachelor in Cultural Anthropology and she wrote her Bachelor thesis about Maasai stereotypes in media and tourism. She loves her three kids and three dogs as well as the life in Tanzania. She is responsible for the website, the marketing and the communication before, while and after your stay. She already spent a year as a volunteer in Tanzania and did an internship in Arusha. She is also a yoga teacher and a massage therapist. So she definitely knows what’s important to make your time unforgettable. At the same time she is your contact person for all intercultural issues and problems.
