    About the program

During your volunteer program in Bolivia, you either work in a center for disabled children and adolescents or in a psychiatric ward. Regarding your preferences, you are welcome to express your expectations.

The Center for Disabled Children and Adolescents is a non-profit organization and helps both the children and their often very poor families. A special concern of the organization is to support single mothers of disabled children. Most of the children who benefit from the center come from the rural areas around Sucre. The goal of the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists is taking care of the children and to help the little patients wherever they can. They are understanding, friendly and always have a smile on their faces. In these institutions volunteers of all kinds are needed, but especially physiotherapists!

Volunteers have the opportunity to work in the following areas: in the boarding school, with therapy sessions, in the day care center or in the own school project.

If you prefer to work in the medical sector, psychiatric work is a potential alternative to working in the center. At the moment doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and medical students are taking care of about 400 patients (number may change). There is also a ward dedicated to elderly patients. There you would help the patient with the food intake, walk them with their wheelchairs or walkers, read from the newspaper, help with washing, etc.

Each of these institutions is located in the city of Sucre or in the surrounding area. Sucre is located in the south of Bolivia, about 2800 meters above sea level and is both the capital and the judicial headquarters of the country. Sucre is known for its unique cultural wealth, which is particularly reflected in its colonial architecture.

    Typical day

During your voluntary service in Bolivia, you work with disabled children and adolescents in Sucre. These children come from poor rural backgrounds, they no longer have parents or they are unable to look after their children properly. Due to their disability, they can not be accommodated in traditional orphanages like other orphans.

During your volunteer work, you will take care of these children in one of the various health centers and assist the doctors, therapists and nurses in their work. You also organize games and activities, such as singing, dancing, painting and crafting and helping the children with schoolwork. You give them the necessary attention and recognition they need to build self-esteem. In general, you should be open-minded and tolerant as a volunteer. A great deal of flexibility is also expected of you, namely that you will help where your help is needed.

Be aware that most of the project sites in Bolivia are rather poor and overcrowded with children and therefore the environment in which you will work is not always easy and well organized. You should be humble, friendly, understanding and warm-hearted.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

                              Insider Advice
Despite living in the modern era of the internet, we know that reliable and competent advice is still an important criterion for most of us. At South America Inside, you will find the benefits of an internet provider and an independent travel agency. We will be glad to pass on our extensive knowledge and regional experience.!

                              Location
It is difficult to run programs when there is nobody “on the ground” to evaluate existing options and search for new opportunities. So, we are located in Chile, on location, and we know everything that is going on first hand. We know what it is like to live as a foreigner in South America and will be happy to assist you in making your stay unforgettable!

                              Independence
South America Inside is an independent provider of language courses, internships, volunteer work, Farm Stays and Work & Travel programs in Latin America. We neither depend financially nor structurally on any other company, language school, association or organization. Therefore, we are able to give personalized information in accordance to your needs and availability.

                            •  Multilingual Team

Our team is multilingual and international! We speak fluent English, Spanish and German, as well as some French and Portuguese. You can be sure that there will be an English-speaking contact person for you before, during, and after your stay.

                              Customer Service

Emails are answered within 48 business hours and every client is treated with the same friendliness and expertise.

                              Gapless and Accurate Information flow

                              Approved Program Places
