About the program

The project

The goal of this project is to support the local community by providing shelter for those in need and rebuilt what has been lost in the recent cyclone disaster.. You will develop infrastructure for the local community and school children and participate in renovating or building parks, playgrounds, classrooms, kindergartens and more.

This is a wonderful opportunity to keep active and fit and to use your creative and construction skills. You may also participate in a landscaping project in addition to construction, join in painting schools and renovating classrooms. The construction project provides tangible assistance to the local community and allows thousands of families who life in inadequate accommodations to move to better quality homes. Children who attend school in crumbling buildings can receive education in secure, new classrooms. Your efforts will contribute to the growth and development of the local community.

This project aims at relieving the communities from some of the stress and pressure under which they live, making a difference to the local community by providing better living conditions. The project involves hard physical and manual labor including laying bricks, painting, laying tiles, doing carpentry and landscaping/gardening. In Suva, the project has a more artistic, fun and creative side where participants renovate or create drawings, paint in several kindergartens and primary schools.

The Location

Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific whose 333 beautiful islands are famous for their blue lagoons and sandy beaches. When the first settlers, the “Lapita” people, arrived three and a half thousand years ago, they lay the foundation of a complex cultural network and a unique identity which differentiates Fiji from its neighbors. Today’s inhabitants of Fiji - Indians, Europeans, Chinese and other Pacific islanders, live together peacefully and preserve their culture and identity. The two major islands - Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are home to the majority of the country’s population, which leaves the rest of Fiji less densely populated.

Suva, located on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, is the capital of the country and its most cosmopolitan city. A harbour city built on the peninsula, Suva has approximately 86,000 inhabitants of European, Indian, Asian and Fijian background.

Fiji’s adventure capital, Pacific Harbor, is located less than an hour drive from Suva and sits along a beautiful stretch of coastline on the Southeast coast of Viti Levu. The area has a well-earned reputation among adrenaline lovers for its wide variety of activities.

Typical day

Your first week will be an introductory experience to the island, this is compulsory for all trips to Fiji, and is the best way to get to know the people, culture and nature before starting your volunteer experience.

During your first day volunteering, you will start planning the project together with the coordinator assigned to you. When you have received all relevant information and have finished planning the project, you will have lunch and head over to the community location. After the working day is done, you will return to the center and attend a meeting where you will provide feedback about your first day.

The following days, prepare for an start early as you go to the project site each morning, where you will start your assigned tasks for the day. During the whole project you will be supported by a project coordinator. After lunch, you will work at the community location focusing on construction and renovation. The working time is around 6 hours a day.

Depending on the school’s plans and activities and the weather and local conditions, the program may change.

About the project

We believe real change can happen when people find life-enhancing opportunities.

Who we are

Global Nomadic empowers positive change by connecting people with projects

Global Nomadic was founded in 2008 with one clear goal – to empower change by connecting people. We believe real change can only come about when people are able to find the right opportunities with the right organisations. Over the past years, we have grown to offer high-quality international internships in a wide range of professional fields, but our aim is still the same; connecting people with projects.

We provide aspiring young professionals with exactly what is needed to set them apart in the very competitive world we live in. We exist to help you further your career through educational international work experience placements, but also to help NGOs around the world carry out their community-building work, by connecting them with you. By working with local NGOs, charities, and communities you will gain excellent experience and valuable skills, aiding you to further your ambitions – whilst making a difference where it’s needed most.

This world is not a perfect place – and we don’t claim to be able to fix it. But what we can do is provide a bridge between you and the people who can. Our mission is to work towards a better and more stable world by connecting people with projects. We believe we work better together than apart. We believe travel and exposure to other cultures, beliefs and ways of life are the best ways to achieve this. We believe you can travel the world and travel your career.

What we do

We provide access to vetted, worthwhile international internships in a wide range of professional fields.

We work in a range of different fields from veterinary medicine and environmental conservation to journalism, public health, business development and education – matching you with reputable, worthwhile organisations around the world. Unlike many other volunteer organisations, we have personally visited and vetted our project partners, to ensure you a safe and worthwhile international experience.

We also choose to only work with partners whose projects contribute to their local community in a sustainable manner. We do not support, nor advocate orphanage tourism or irresponsible wildlife conservation projects. Our aim is to help our project partners focus on their core work by offering an easy way to find committed interns and volunteers to support their daily activities.

Our volunteers

Global Nomadic is a trusted community meeting space connecting people with NGO projects around the world.

We also offer helping you to source and organise the best flights, insurance, visas and all the many other things you will need before you reach your project destinations, including country guides, packing lists and much more! We want to make sure that you have the volunteering time of your life.

Global Nomadic personally visits all volunteer sites to ensure a quality experience for volunteers. You will receive support before, during and after your placement.
