The butterfly farm Vida de Colores started in 2005 as a school research project on butterflies. In the school project 10 blue Morpho butterflies were born, which multiplied and gave birth to the first butterfly house. Over time we researched and reproduced more butterfly species. At present we are dedicated to continue researching the fascinating world of butterflies and teaching about this fascinating subject. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM: 
Primary program objective: To increase the positive impacts of the project on the conservation and research of butterfly species and their host plants. 

Other objectives: Reproduce as many butterfly species as possible. To plant host plants, using methods of planting: seed germination, seedbeds, seedlings, seedlings, cuttings, layering, etc. Research on the different species of butterflies and moths present in the vicinity of the project. Reforest with host plants in the project and nearby areas. Educate visitors through social networks about the importance of conserving the environment.

PHYSICAL SPACE OF THE PROJECT
Shared rooms (depending on the number of volunteers) Bed linen and towels. 
1 shared bathroom with shower 
Washing machine and dryer, Kitchen: microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator and blender. Internet, Electricity, outlets.

The project facilities are surrounded by green areas planted with butterfly host plants. 
The infrastructures are as follows: Laboratory for the care of larvae in wooden crates and reused materials. Office. 
7 modules for butterfly rearing. 
Reception and rest area. 
Area designed for the reuse of butterfly wings and creation of entomological collections. 
Outdoor planting areas. Gardens

How to get started?

It's actually very simple to be part of our program. Simply register on the right hand side of this page. The money you spend to stay with us with ensure the animals can eat, receive medication and live a happy life. 

General Requirements:
  • Personal insurance policy.
  • Age between 18 and 55.
  • Use appropriate clothing for field work: field boots... 
  • Do not smoke tobacco or ingest illicit substances inside the premises during the working day and Inside the Installations 
  • Take care of and maintain the work material and facilities. 
  • Do not extract flora or fauna without authorization. 
  • Respect the rules of the lodge and the project. 
  • To present a policy.

DIFFERENT DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES:
As a team member of our Costa Rica volunteer program, you can expect the following daily responsibilities: From 7:00 AM to 4:00PM with 1 or 2 days off in the weekend.

1. To learn about the life cycle of butterflies. 
2. Collect butterfly eggs and take them to the laboratory. 
3. Releasing butterflies in their respective butterfly houses. 
4. Soil work. 
5. Feeding the butterflies by placing fruit and flowers and cleaning the feeders. 
6. Cleaning the trails.
7. Caring for the plants: watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, sowing...
In addition, volunteers are encouraged to develop their own individual projects. If you see potential for such a special project, let us know and we will work with you to translate that idea into practice. We love when a new volunteer leaves their mark on the Rescue Center for all future visitors to enjoy.


The cost per day you personally will also get all of the following benefits below:

  • Private transportation from the airport.( to go back to the airport is not included because some volunteers decide travel around Costa Rica when finished the program).
  • Very safe and comfortable lodging (4 persons per room) with the option to upgrade to a private glamping tent or tiki-hut.
  • 3 delicious and healthy meals per day prepared by our private chefs (also, we cater to vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free diets.
  • Daily volunteer night activities including zumba lessons.

8 am start working until 11:30 am

Minimum Age: 18 years

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Language Skills

You need to speak English (basic level) or Spanish (basic level)

Nationality Restrictions

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.

Time Commitment

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 07:00 - 16:00

Travel Insurance

Details on arrival

We have volunteers from every country and background possible. Spanish fluency is not necessary.  We work 365 days a year, you can arrive any day of the week but we do have a schedule for arrivals. Our Host Family will have its gates open from 6am till 10pm if you arrive after or before this schedule you'll need to wait for the next day or the next opening. We can provide and arrange your transportation to and from the airport with our trusted drivers if you'll like to but it would have an extra cost. 

Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in Costa Rica will be picked up at a meeting point decided beforehand.

VOLUNTEER NOW COSTA RICA is located in Escazu and Guanacaste, San Jose, Costa Rica. This is a family company that has been around since 2004 and enlisted the aid of hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, which come to our country to work on the ecological and social projects our company offers.
